Burlingame High School
Monthly Highlights

Dedicated to the preparation of academically and socially responsible students.

Principal's Corner

Dear Panther Families,

Burlingame High School continues to bustle with numerous activities on campus as we close off February and look ahead to the coming month.

During this past month, we saw our BHS Mock Trial students have their first county competition where their defense team defeated Serra High School. The Robotics Team finished their First Robotics Competition robot and will be preparing for upcoming competitions. Our music program held its first collaborative concert with Burlingame Intermediate School where the talents of the two band programs coalesced into an outstanding evening performance.

We appreciatively recognize our winter season student athletes who practiced late into the night and demonstrated a great deal of perseverance even as they maintained their academic standings. Special thanks go to our dedicated coaches who go above and beyond for the sake of our students. We are pleased to congratulate the wrestling team who placed as co-champions with Oceana High School in the Peninsula Athletic League in their division, as well as to the varsity girls soccer team and varsity boys basketball team for qualifying for CCS playoffs. We are fully into the spring season for athletics and wish our student athletes the best of luck and great deal of enjoyment.

Our theater students are working hard for their performance in the spring play, Mystery Weekend by Billy St. John. Set to open at 7:30 pm on Friday, March 11, this play promises chills "in this hairpin, twisty, curvy play." Additional performances will take place on Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 pm, and on Sunday, March 13, at 2:00 pm. Tickets and information are available at www.facebook.com/BurlingameDrama. If the BHS fall musical was any indication, audiences will be able to look forward to another wonderful evening of theater.

March brings other highly anticipated activities, including In Concert, International Week at BHS, District-wide Talent Showcase, and Toast of the Town. Please look on our school website and the weekly NewsAlert for more information about these and additional events.

Go Panthers!

Principal Di Yim

BHS Parents' Group Corner

Please plan to attend our next BHS Parents' Group meeting on Wednesday, March 9th at 7pm in the BHS Library.  We will be presenting a Nominating Committee and taking nominations for board positions for the 2016-17 school year.  Specifically, we need help in leadership/administration, communications, finance and secretarial.  If you or anyone you know (including incoming freshman parents) would like to apply their skills to benefit BHS, please let us know.  We'd love them to join the team!

The BHS Parents' Group wants your input on funding priorities for the 2016-17 school year.  Please complete this survey before April 1.  To see how your donations were allocated this year, you can visit our web page here .  Thank you for helping us make BHS a great school.

The San Mateo Union High School District has started the recruitment process to find Burlingame High School's next principal, and they would like your help.  Let them know the experience, leadership qualities, vision and communication style you hope the next BHS leader will possess. Fill out their survey  by Friday, March 11.  The district is also looking for parent volunteers to be involved in the search process.  If you're interested in a role, please contact Deputy Superintendent Human Resource & Instruction, Dr. Kirk Black at  kblack@smuhsd.org .

Volunteers are working diligently on our annual community event, Toast of the Town.
Purchase tickets now  for our Rock Lobster Bash on Saturday, March 19 in San Carlos .  It's a fun venue with great food supplied by the BHS family-owned New England Lobster Company, and will feature live music from talented parent musicians!

Counselor Corner

As February comes to a close, the counselors are proud to report that we tackled online Aeries scheduling for the first time.  This allowed students in real time to input their class choices for the next year directly into our computer system.  Students were given a log in and password, which allowed them to log into Aeries at home to show their parents.  During the final two weeks of February, we will meet with all students one-on-one in our offices to confirm their original course selections.  Counselors will continue to work with students until April 22 nd for any last minute changes.  The month of March is devoted to working with students matriculating from 8 th grade.  We work with all feeder schools to ensure that students transition and are placed appropriately in courses for their upcoming school year.  We are excited to share one more link for all families.  In the past we've had an official Course Preview Day, but this year the Art of Video class created videos to showcase all of our different electives...

This link can be reached by visiting the BHS homepage and going under the counseling tab to the course selection page.

Activities Around Campus

Kindness Week
Kindness Grams and Passion Pins were a hit during Kindness Week.  Students sent each other grams similarly as Valentine's.  Passion Pins floated around campus as students recognized each other for being kind.

Elections
ASB held elections for the ASB cabinet and Class cabinets for the 2016-2017 school year at the end of February.  Check out the Leadership website at  tinyurl.com/burlingamehighleadership  to learn more about the election.
Congratulations to all who were elected!

International Week
International Week is coming up the week of March 14th-18th.  Get ready for a week of cultural awareness from various dress-up days to lunch-time performances to the cultural assembly showcasing the various cultures of BHS and finishing the week off with the cultural food fair.  This is a week definitely not to be missed!

Special Projects Update

The Parents' Group has been hard at work deciding where to spend the money that YOU parents donated last year to the Excellence Fund! We got requests from teachers for spring Special Projects totaling $60,000, but we only had $30,000 left in our fund.  Luckily, the district will be stepping in to pay for some of the requests, some can be tabled until the fall funding season, and some smaller items can be paid for using Visionary Teachers' Fund (also paid for by the Parents' Group)--here is what we funded for Spring 2016 through the generosity of the parents:

  • 8 microphones, 1 Tesla coil, and 12 LabQuest interfaces for Physics.
  • 10 fetal pigs for AP Biology to dissect after the AP test is over.
  • 3 Apple computers for Yearbook to run Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Baking supplies for Foods and Nutrition (now that they have ovens!).
  • 1 laptop for Architectural Design so the teacher can edit student work.
  • 15 computers for Exploring Technology so half the kids can work on their designs while the other half are working in the shop.  In addition, supplies needed for the shop.
  • 4 Apple computers for Journalism so they can run their sophisticated software to put together the newspaper.

Our hope is that your student will directly benefit from these purchases, as they are spread out over a variety of departments and classes to impact the most students at BHS.  A lot of time and energy goes into these purchases, from the efforts of the teachers to determine what is needed and presenting to the committee, to the work of Di and the Parents' Group funding committee to vet each request, to the actual purchasing by the Special Projects treasurer.

Thank you for supporting BHS!  We couldn't do this without YOU!
Amelia Nash
Special Projects treasurer

Check out the front page of your library website and do your research with one click!  It's called PowerSearch! You can access it by going to Pantherlearningcenter.com - your 24/7 online Library.  PowerSearch combines all databases together to bring you results faster. This is not the Internet!!!  All materials are vetted and published in these databases. It is awesome!

Music Department Corner

BIS/BHS COMBINED CONCERT:  Congratulations to BIS and BHS Band Students on great performances last month at their first Joint Concert!  The format allowed each school's bands to play one or two numbers, culminating in a combined performance of Electricity by Brian Balmages. We hope the collaboration sparked a little electrical current between our schools and encourages BIS students to continue with music in high school!

Mr Ari Brown from BIS Symphonic Band conducted the combined group.

CHOIR CONCERT:  On February 11, the Choir Concert entitled "Showtune Extravaganza" featured soloists, ensembles and choirs from BHS and SMHS singing songs from our favorite musicals!
Pictured are Cassis Brown, Ally Kelly, Sage Arquero, John Weingand, and Veronica Phillips.

Interact Club

Interact Club Book Drive for Court and Community Schools' Library

BHS Interact Club is conducting a book drive to benefit the students in the San Mateo Court and Community Schools.  These schools serve two groups of students that are in great need: students at Hillcrest School because they are incarcerated, and foster youth at two locations next to Hillcrest, Camp Kemp for girls and Camp Glenwood for boys.   Many of the students do not have privileges or access to TV or other entertainment/media. Students go to the library weekly and can check out books.  The librarian has provided us with a wish list   from the students to show their interests, but the book drive is not limited to these titles - any books that might interest the students would be welcome.  Paperbacks are preferred, but hardback books are also acceptable. Please donate if you can!

Dates of book drive: February 29 - March 18

Drop off locations -boxes located in BHS Office and in front of 3 homes: 1915 Carmelita Ave. in Burlingame; 605 Burlingame Ave. in Burlingame; and 45 Sheldon Way in Hillsborough.

For more information about Hillcrest School, you can read this article in the San Jose Mercury News.

For more information about the book drive or to arrange a pick up if you cannot drop off your books, contact Interact Club member Elena Mosse,  elenamosse@gmail.com.

Kids For Packard

Last month fifteen students from the Red Cross Club and Beyond Borders Club teamed up to work on a service project called KIDS FOR PACKARD coordinated by the Palo Alto Auxiliary. They met at Hillsdale Mall at the Build-A-Bear Workshop and made teddy bears for children at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. As a result of combined efforts from BHS and other schools around the peninsula, this project will provide hospitalized children with a bear on their birthday, holiday time, or a special occasion.

Culinary Arts

The California Technical Education Department at BHS collaborated this month in a great way!  Mr. Scialanga, our Exploring Tech teacher, owned and operated a meat market and worked as a butcher before he joined us at Burlingame. He visited the Culinary Arts class to teach a lesson on chicken parts and how to cut and prepare whole "WOGS" (chickens without giblets).  Mr. Erle, our Art of Video teacher, joined us to record the event. Some students enjoyed this more than others! This was a great way for students to see where the meat comes from as well as how to prepare protein in a healthy way.

April Lee prepares to experiment with chicken.

Anthony Molina, Adam Taylor, and Kirby Pablos explore the fine art of chicken preparation.
