National President

Fran Holtgreven

A Message from our National President

The National Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary 92nd National

Convention held in Reno/Sparks, Nevada was a very informative and

productive convention. I would like to thank all Auxiliary and Associative

members who attended in-person or via Zoom. Business was completed and fun and camaraderie was had by all attendees. I would personally like to

thank all MOPHA Officers, Departments, Units and Associates for their support during the convention.

It is an honor for me to be re-elected as your National President of the MOPHA for the 2025-2026 year. The support I received is very appreciated. The coming year I will keep “RISE TO THE CHALLENGE” as the theme for 2025-2026. We did “Rise to the challenge” last year and I believe we can “Rise” even higher this coming year.

For the coming year a committee will be charged with going over the Bylaws, Resolutions, Standing Rules and CBL’s to make them more understandable and updated for our organization. A Zoom meeting will be held every month for this project. If you are interested in becoming a member of this committee, please contact the National Secretary, Judy Fiddler, or myself. A committee will also be added to investigate having the MOPHA become a 501(c)3. This will be a challenge, but we can “Rise to the Challenge”.

Membership clean-up is still a priority. Check your rosters and reach out to members you have not heard from for some time. It takes just a phone call or a card to let them know they have not been forgotten. When you do find someone who has changed their address, phone number, email address or has passed, please contact the National Membership Officer, Cheryl Perez.

MOST IMPORTANT is to help our Patriots and Veterans across our great country. Helping our Patriots and Veterans is the REASON we have this great organization and why we work hard to keep the Auxiliary moving forward. Remember our HOV and CDCE Grants that you can receive money to help complete a project.

I would like to introduce the 2025-2026 Elected National Officers: Teviah Gilliard, National Sr. Vice President; Linda Bellis, National Jr. Vice President; Tracy Derr, National Treasurer; Jan Knap, National Parliamentarian. Judy Fiddler has graciously agreed to remain the National Secretary for this year. Thank you, Judy. Other appointed officers will be placed on our website: purpleheartauxiliary.org and also be named at the Zoom meeting to be held July 24, 2025, at 8pm Eastern, 7pm Central, 6pm Mountain and 5pm Pacific.

Please plan to attend for more information regarding the upcoming year.

REMEMBER: THE MOMENT WE STOP ACCEPTING CHALLENGES IS THE

MOMENT WE STOP MOVING FORWARD!

MESSAGES FROM OUR AUXILIARY LEADERSHIP

National Senior Vice President

Teviah Gilliard

Greetings and Salutations, members and friends of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary-

As I continue my second term as your National Senior Vice President, I’m filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible year we've shared—and the momentum we’re carrying forward. Our recent National Convention in Reno, Nevada was a true testament to our unity, purpose, and passion. With the fitting theme “Purple Hearts Are Wild in Reno,” we came together to celebrate, connect, and collaborate on what’s next for our beloved organization. The lively halls of The Nugget hotel buzzed with the energy of members from across the country, each arriving with a sense of anticipation for the important business ahead—and for the joy that comes from being in the company of those who care deeply about our nation’s heroes.

We extend a most gracious thank you to the Departments of California and Nevada for hosting such an exceptional Convention. Their dedication made this reunion successful, informative, and endlessly fun!

This year's Convention brought many exciting updates to our leadership team and I must congratulate National President Fran Holtgreven serving a second term, National Junior Vice President Linda Bellis- who arrived bursting with enthusiasm and innovative ideas for fundraisers, newly appointed National Chaplain Kay Jo Baucom (PNP), newly appointed National Webmaster Barbara Waller [of Georgia] and last but definitely not least, our cherished National Secretary Judy Fiddler—who had planned to retire—will now continue serving alongside National President Fran Holtgreven, keeping strength and continuity at the heart of our leadership. I can’t help but feel a swell of gratitude for each officer’s willingness to serve.

In our business sessions, we dove deep into the resolutions affecting our structure and future. Bylaws Committee member and PNP Cheryl Perez underscored the importance of not just knowing our bylaws but shaping them to work for us while remaining in full compliance. She challenged each Unit and Department to review, refine, and submit updates/resolutions—an empowering call to action for our members at every level.

One particularly emotional and eye-opening moment came from our visit with Fern Winbush, USA (Retired) of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). Fern shared the profound meaning behind their work to locate and identify American service members who fought overseas and remain missing. Her words stirred our hearts: it’s not just about closure—it’s about dignity, a proper homecoming, and burial for those who gave their all. DPAA’s tireless efforts give families peace and honor our promise never to forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I was deeply moved, filled with hope and pride knowing there is a persistent, compassionate effort to bring the unknown fallen back home. May their results multiply tenfold—and then some.

We were also visited by representatives from Reno’s VA Hospital, who addressed the plight of homeless veterans in the Reno/Sierra region. Prior to their visit, the in-person convention attendees assembled personal care bags filled with essentials for veterans experiencing homelessness. A heartfelt service project meant to say: someone cares. It was quick, impactful, and brimming with compassion. It was a service project that has been carried on Nationally since the first annual symposium in Orlando and running several years through Auxiliary members at the Unit level.

And of course—let’s talk fun! Of course, no convention would be complete without fun and fellowship.   Patriots’ Night was an absolute blast, featuring a wildly entertaining horse race where the Auxiliary was (gleefully!) defeated for the fourth year in a row by the spirited Patriots. Maybe it was a daydream, but I think some Extraterrestrials may or may not have abducted two of our leaders, put them under mind control and made them race each other… Laughter and friendly competition filled the room. The auction that followed? Spectacular. Members of the Order and the Auxiliary enthusiastically & generously participated and helped raise crucial support for our programs—it was a resounding success!

No recap of our time in Reno would be complete without mentioning our unforgettable group day trip to Virginia City. Nestled in the rolling high desert hills, Virginia City offered a perfect blend of breathtaking vistas, frontier history, and genuine appreciation for those who serve. From the moment we arrived, the warm welcome was unmistakable—this storied town truly loves its servicemembers, past and present. We strolled down historic wooden boardwalks, taking in the vibrant shops and the echoes of the Old West, all while sharing laughter and camaraderie.

Virginia City’s deep military ties are woven into its very streets. Did you know the city played a role in supporting Union troops during the Civil War? The legendary Comstock Lode silver discovery helped finance the Union war effort, and many veterans settled here afterwards, drawn by the promise of a new beginning in the West. Several historic buildings still bear tribute to these early defenders, and we paused at the impressive Veterans Memorial to honor those who came before us.

Our group took in sweeping views of Mount Davidson, the highest point in the Virginia Range, and reflected on the rugged determination that connects the city’s mining pioneers to the brave servicemembers of today. We even learned that Virginia City was once home to Company F of the Nevada National Guard, whose members protected the community and reached out in times of need.

The day was a beautiful reminder of why service—past, present, and future—matters. Virginia City’s embrace of our group showed the enduring spirit of gratitude for the military, and we left with full hearts, new memories, and a deeper sense of connection to both history and each other.

President Fran Holtgreven also appointed a committee to research our 501(c)(3) status, ensuring we uphold our not-for-profit standing and set practical goals for safeguarding our fulfillment and service reach. This committee is designed to provide clarity and direction as we work toward ensuring our compliance and maximizing our eligibility for grants and donations.

As the convention ended, there was a collective sense of accomplishment and optimism. We tackled critical issues, celebrated our achievements, and set clear priorities for the year ahead. Our officers are installed and ready to lead, our path toward 501(c)(3) clarity is clearer than ever, and our commitment to fundraising and membership is renewed. Every member left Reno with new tools, fresh ideas, and a strengthened resolve to serve. We are reminded once again that the work we do matters—and that together, there is nothing we cannot achieve.

As for my continued focus? Membership. Please—scrub those rosters! Bad addresses can affect your Department and Unit’s eligibility for rebates and create gaps in our outreach. Start simple: verify contact information and update addresses regularly. If you need help or have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to me—or our dedicated Membership Officer, PNP Cheryl Perez. We're here to support you.

Together, we’re advancing our mission and standing tall in service. Each effort, each update, and each laugh we shared in Reno reminded me why this organization matters—and why I am so proud to be a part of it. Here’s to a Happy Auxiliary New Year!

Yours in Patriotism and Warmest Regards,

Teviah

National Jr. Vice

Linda Bellis

Reno was fun! I love seeing everyone I am so honored to be your junior vice. I held back tears when I accepted the position.

We all had a great time eating at Rosie‘s losing money at the slot machines and tables. I didn’t play any of them; however, I gave a patriot $20 and well - he lost it. At least he had fun.

I want to thank Mike for working the supply table and helping me with my clothing, Ma

This year will have its challenges. I have ideas for the ways and mean auctions for next year and extra little fundraisers to all my auxiliary members. You never know where our Purple Heart friend will turn up next. Remember to "Axolot" of your members this year to help our veterans. Let’s make this a fantastic year!

My goals for the year are:

1) Help with the 501(c)(3) to get donations for our veterans and for our national auxiliary.

2) Get businesses to donate products for auctions. 3 clean up bylaws so we can understand them.

Our "Purple Heart Friend" can be purchased for $15 plus shipping. It will be a FUNdraiser that will bring happiness and a lot of questions about the MOPHA. We will be having a naming contest for "our friend" in the coming weeks. Start thinking now!

Our little friend serves as a reminder that your Purple Heart Family is always near. He's lightweight and made of plastic polymer.

He not only can sit on your shoulder, he can be sat on a counter or shelf to keep you company.

Well...Convention is over and now I have to update everything...again. Congratulations to the newly elected officers. I hope you are all successful this year.

I want to thank Madame President, Fran Holtgreven for bestowing the Martha Washington Spirit Award to me this year. I was totally surprised and so very honored to receive it. Now Mike and I can go incognito as George and Martha because PNP Kay Jo Baucom had honored Mike as her George Washington Spirit recipient in 2023.

Please let us know of any one you know of whose lives have been disrupted (member or not), thank you/bless you.

The 92nd National Convention was remarkable, but you’ll read about it from other reports or by word of mouth. A shout out of appreciation to Chaplain Varejcka (NE), Chaplain Waller (CA), Chaplain McLaughlin (CO), and Chaplain Sanchez (MI), for sharing during ‘Inspirational Moments’ which also presented an opportunity for membership to be meet other Chaplains present.
