Much is happening as we transition into a new year. Soon, you'll find a new edition of a digital Purple Heart Magazine online and it will feature Auxiliary information and articles. We'll pass it along soon as it is ready!

Our Finance Committee will meet the last week of the month and after that, I'll be reaching out to the NEC (National Executive Committee) with updates and information. The Purple Heart Service Foundation has sent us an executed grant agreement for this year and in that, are promised funds for VAVS grants. You'll be hearing about that as soon as we have finalized details to share.

While many members are still having meetings on Zoom, if your Department is planning a convention, whether online or in person, please let us know the details so we can save the date and plan for officers to attend, if appropriate.

The most popular question of this time of year always points to the National Convention. My leadership team was able to meet with the MOPH National Adjutant, Sr. Vice, and West Virginia Commander this past week and they are tentatively still planning towards an in person (or even hybrid) National Convention this year. I'll keep our members informed of details as they develop. I know so many of you are ready for in person fellowship, waves, and togetherness....even if it has to be socially distanced.

Be Safe and Stay Well,
Amanda

Happy January, dear friends!
This month’s Zoom Meeting will feature a past guest, Joy Fragola, who will talk about “Compassion Fatigue”. Compassion Fatigue occurs in individuals who have undergone traumatic events or is supporting those with catastrophic injury or illness. It can have an immediate and/or cumulative impact on the responder.

The resulting impact affects professional and personal performance and relationships at all levels. Joy’s presentation will help you recognize your individual response pattern as well as the reactive behaviors of others.

The very essence of our Auxiliary is volunteerism, caregiving, service, and support; these tasks are wonderful and although we all take extreme pride in doing it, it often makes us weary. So, invite a friend or family member and let’s Zoom of Thursday! Joy’s presentation will be enlightening, especially during the dark and bleary days of winter and the pandemic.

During this month’s zoom, I’ll also be shouting “Calling all Volunteers!” It’s a New year, with new tasks! Last year, we had mentioned that we have many new ideas that we will be incorporating in the next few months. To do this, it will take volunteers to make these projects a reality. I am looking forward to this month’s Zoom Meeting to share the details!

Salutations to my MOPHA family! I have loved that word since I read the delightful children’s book, Charlotte’s Web and just knowing I have greeted you all with an endearing term makes me smile I wanted to share a few thoughts about our MOPHA Rada products fundraiser and let you know, these are quality knives, kitchen utensils , dip, soup, and cheesecake mixes.

To use one of these knives, means I am able to work with the finest equipment, offered at reasonable prices. The knives are designed to comfortably fit in your hand, peel, or cut with ease and look stylish as well. The dips, cheeseballs and soups are equally easy to make and delicious to enjoy! Eating is definitely one of my favorite things to do!

Because technology is a challenge for me, I want to let you know that Rada offers catalog sales as well. Their products are attractively displayed and easy to order. Purchasing could not be easier! The customer service team is eager to help, as I am if you experience problems. Orders are processed quickly. I received my order within 3 days! Rada products have proven to be worthy of my praise and hopefully will be of yours. Let’s make this fundraiser a huge success- we all benefit with available funds being at our disposal for Auxiliary projects. Our Patriots deserve everything we can give them

May God continue to guide us as we serve those who first served us

Standing Rules - Though most all members are familiar with the Standing Rules, it seems like an appropriate subject for me to write about considering they must be approved by the National Parliamentarian.

What is a Standing Rule? A standing rule is a motion that the body wants to repeat automatically. A Unit or Department may adopt their own set of Standing Rules. Once the rule(s) are presented to the body, the members make changes as desired. Then the rules are adopted.

The benefit of this is that once the rules are adopted the proper officers may act on them without permission from the body. New rules may be added and old ones dropped; however, a motion is needed for this action. General procedure is that if a member makes a motion she wants added to the Standing Rules, she must first make her motion and if it is carried, she must then make another motion that it become a standing rule. The rules are then sent to the National Parliamentarian for approval.

Some standing rules might include a gift for an out-going president or sending flowers for a deceased member. With these two examples, it is wise to also set a dollar amount so even though the rule is in place, it has limits. Any motion or standing rule which conflicts with the Constitution and Bylaws of the MOPHA or with any law of the United States shall automatically be null and void.

So, you might ask, what would keep the National Parliamentarian from approving a standing rule of a Unit or a Department? The answer is anything that is in conflict with our national bylaws.

An example of a rule that would not be approved is how elections are conducted. Let’s say your unit and/or department wants to keep the same officers every year and want to make that a standing rule. That is a stark contradiction to our bylaws. Our bylaws say that units hold their elections in April and departments hold their elections in May. The bylaws also indicate that a term is from one election to the next. So, in short, we must hold nominations and elections each year even when we might choose to keep the same officers in place. In a nutshell, not following this procedure can deprive an eligible member the opportunity to be nominated and elected if they choose to run for an office.

I hope everyone is staying safe and well during these crazy times of confinement. We are in our Florida home so not as confined as we would be in Michigan’s snowy weather.

A Thank You from Augusta, GA
We've given out $3000 in HOV Grants!
Don't miss out this year. Request yours today.

Check out this Thank You from one veteran who recieved a Christmas blessing from Unit 425 (Photo of veteran with Unit President Janice Pinkett).

To whom it may concern:
I want to express my gratitude for receiving the gift card. It was a really generous gift to receive this Christmas from you all. I don’t know how many of you will read this letter, but I just want to say thank you to everyone who was involved in this endeavor. I thank you for all the hard work that you go through for not just me but for all of the veterans. It is because of organizations like this one that hope is brought into the lives of veterans so that they may continue to do the things they do. I wish you well and that your day is just a little bit brighter knowing that you were able to help someone this year. Lastly I want to say thank you one last time because I really appreciate all that you do. - Sincerely, W. J.
