April Winds!

April is a special time for so many reasons. The winds are magical, bringing in a season of rebirth. And the renewal of life is everywhere. The budding trees, the flowering gardens, and springtime babies all around remind us that time is important and does not stand still.

I enjoy the changing seasons and the differences in the weather and my surroundings that come with them. I also enjoy children and the joy they find in the springtime. The sound of laughter fills the air and their faces reflect pure delight as the outdoor hours increases the playing time they have! It makes April the perfect month to recognize military children and the unique situations they face.

The 2023 theme is “Taking Care of Our Military Children”. And together we can make these children and their families’ lives a little more special! The month of April allows everyone to support and honor children of our Armed Forces personnel. The Color Purple represents the combined colors of every branch of the military and the importance of our military families. The specific date of April 15th this year, is designated Purple-Up Day, and I encourage everyone to wear purple on that day.

There are other ways I might suggest as well that will remind all of us that military children face circumstances that most will never experience. It is possible that the news media could highlight families in your area with children of military parents. Or the local news station could focus on military families and the challenges they face. Another way to support these children is to have their school set aside a special place where they can visit, within the school, when things feel out of control or things change too quickly.

Children of military families must adapt to changes - new schools, new friends, new homes, new places- changes out of their control. Being able to see new places is exciting, but can be scary as well; not knowing anyone and leaving old friends, so, supporting these children and their families is the least we can do.

They are the future, and we can ensure that our future, and theirs, is a good one!

Wear purple and help support those who give So much to us!

Purple Up!

April is listed as the month of the Military Child by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy. This is a way that military families and their children are applauded for the daily sacrifices and the challenges they overcome.

Children who grow up in military families have unique experiences compared to their civilian peers. Why is this? These families move frequently, kids might spend extended periods of time away from their parents during deployment and training periods, and get indirect exposure to war, conflict and violence, often at a young age. There are over 1 million children that may have at least one parent in active duty

service. These service members are employed full-time by the military and can be deployed at any time. Most active duty service members will experience at least one deployment, where they go abroad in service of a mission, during their careers. Deployments last an average of six to 12 months, but they vary in length of time and type of service, and they can be in combat or non-combat situations. No matter the type or length, deployments are a stressful time for the service member and their family back home. Family routines are disrupted and the remaining parent is left to manage the household and childcare on their own. Children may fear for the safety of the deployed parent, and younger children who can’t understand why the parent is leaving may fear that they won’t return. Depending on the type and location of the deployment, there may be significant time differences, and the service member may have limited means of communicating with their family back home, making it difficult to maintain a relationship while they’re gone. When they do return, the reintegration process has its own difficulties. Especially with younger children, parents are often met by a child that is very different than the one they left behind and who may have little to no recollection of them. They have to rebuild their relationship from the ground up, which can be stressful for everyone involved, more so if the service member returns with physical or psychological injuries.

To help the children fit into a new community they have been assigned for maybe the next three years, there are different organizations to help with programs that may help strengthen military families, including youth development and educational programs. Children may have the help of joining a 4H program, having access to Sesame Street for the Military Family activities designed for pre-school age children that may help with the challenges of military life. Military Kid Connect is an age appropriate resource to support military children ages 6-17 who are dealing with unique psychological challenges of military life.

When we think about the military child, you might ask does all this moving have any effects on the development and mental health of the kids. According to a review of nine studies comparing military and civilian children, military children generally adapt well to the changes and adversity they experience.

During the month of the military child, students and their families are encouraged to wear purple, which shows support and signifies the unique sacrifices military children make alongside their families, both at home and abroad. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military: Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.

The military child is so unique that they have their own name “Military Brat” and also have their own official flower “The dandelions”. Dandelions can grow roots almost anywhere.

I had a conversation with a Military Brat, Mr. Kenny Ray. Here are his thoughts about growing up as a “Brat”. In his words: Growing up a military brat abroad has positively affected my life in many ways. One of the most important aspects is the influence of other cultures on my life. I believe it has kept me well-rounded and more open to learning new ways to think, behave, and consider opinions that aren't necessarily a reflection of my own. I'm less afraid to explore other countries, try new foods, and learn

new languages. Speaking of languages, people here have a hard time pinpointing where I'm from. I've had the pleasure to make lifelong friends all over the world… So I guess you could say being a brat makes you a 'world' citizen. I would say one of the most peculiar aspects of growing up abroad Is that when I think of 'home', I think of a small German town in Baden-Württemberg and not some city here in America. If you're not careful, the nostalgia can really get to you. When it does, I simply pick up the phone, or hop in my car, or jump on a plane and reconnect with the people who are a

significant part of my history”.

In additional readings, I came across 6 items expressing by Steven A. Cohen ,stating why being a military kid was the best thing that happened to him. In listening to Kenny, he pretty much said the same thing.

1. I saw first-hand the incredible men and women serving our country.

2. I learned to value people in my life

3. I learned how to be adaptable.

4. I saw how people lived all over the country and beyond.

5. I was raised with a love of country.

6. I had a strong sense of community.

The months of April and May are extremely busy for Units and Departments of

the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary with Conventions, election of

Officers and projects to help our Patriots and Veterans. Enjoy the comradery, fun

and laughter and the planning for the next year during these events.

While attending your Unit and Department meeting, think of helping with the

National Ways and Means events that will be held at the National Convention, to

be held August 14-18, 2023, in Baton Rouge LA, by a “donation-in-kind” gift card.

Please remember that Patriots and Auxiliary members will be from all areas of the United States. Tickets will be sold, and a ticket will be put in a container for the gift card that the ticket holder would like to win. If you will not be able to attend, please send gift cards to me or with a member who is attending. Also, remember to be looking for those dollar bills with the “A” for Auxiliary and “L” for love our Veterans. Keep track of how many you have collected and send a check to Tracy Derr, National Treasurer or bring a check with you to the convention. A prize will be given to the Individual, Unit and Department who has

collected the most “A” and “L” bills.

Bring all the jewelry that you have collected while cleaning out your jewelry box to Miss Bling Bling's jewelry table.

Something new this year is a Money Jar instead of a 50/50 raffle. I decided to have a Money Jar in memory of my father, who was a WWII Veteran, he always had a jar filled with bills, coins, objects and other surprises that our family would look forward to at Christmas. Tickets will be available for purchase and the winner will be drawn at the gala. Two jars will be available to place tickets in.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Happy April to Everyone:

I hope you had a wonderful, blessed Easter.

It is that time of year to install your officers and submit your yearly Installation report to me as soon as possible (NO LATER THAN MAY 31). I will send an acknowledgement that I received it. If you do not receive the acknowledgement, then consider your report NOT RECEIVED and get it in. This starts the process for rebates.

All other reports, except your Life Member Verification, 990 and Finance, are due to the respective Chairperson BY MAY 15. That allows the Chair to compile the reports received and submit them in the allotted time to National.

Information for the National Convention in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is on the website. Go to PurpleHeartAuxiliary.org and click on the many different links to see what is available.

Wishing you a great Spring…

April is Volunteer appreciation month. You are probably being honored at your site within the next couple weeks with a special celebration and recognition. You are very much appreciated and I want to personally thank you also. For the fiscal year of 2022 which is October 1, 2021 - September 30, 2022 MOPHA volunteers volunteered 3794 hours. So far for the fiscal year of 2023, (October 1, 2022 - March 15,2023) MOPHA volunteers have volunteered 1194 hours. I need all volunteers to have their chief fill out with you an AJR (annual joint review) These were due in October and I have received very few.

You may remember I reported last year that there is a new system being updated. It is still a work in progress and continues to be built. Data still has to be pull manually out and populated into reports. But the platform is available for them to prepare now. One of the topics at the NAC meeting will be Volunteer reintegration. Some of this is the CDCE offices being slow in getting up and operating once again at a pre-pandemic level. Please contact your chiefs, if you have not been allowed to volunteer and get started once again.  CDCE is being encouraged to hold more in person meetings with the reps and deps. Also if someone reading this wants to be a volunteer please notify the chief at the facility or contact me and I will help you also become a rep or dep for our wonderful organization.

Once again.  THANK YOU for volunteering and helping our Veterans and the staff at our VA facilities.

Americanism

April is Military child month or Month of the Military Child. "Purple Up! For Military Kids" It was established by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986 and is sponsored by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy. There are more than 1.6 million military children. Military children face unique challenges such as frequent moves, deployments, and separations from their parents. The purpose is to recognize and support their resilience and quality of life.

The color purple was chosen because it symbolizes the combined colors of all the branches of the Military. Army green - Coast Guard blue - Air Force blue - Marine red - Navy blue!

Please drop me a note and let me know what you did personally or as a unit for the "Military children in your community, school etc. Would love to include in my report and be able to give others suggestions.

NOTE from webmaster: Please forgive me for inadvertently omitting Chaplain Gilliard's March submission. It is being posted below, following it is April's submission.

From the Desk of the MOPHA National Chaplain

March 2023

In preparing for the February’s Chaplain’s Zoom, the thought occurred to me of this month being NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: “CELEBRATING WOMEN WHO TELL OUR STORIES” – and we have plenty to tell, just not enough “time”.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals who participated in the Chaplain’s Zoo. Thank you for your time, interest and sharing. Although February 2023 Chaplain’s Zoom was an open discussion focused on Chaplains encouraging each other as we do others, I thought of the many women within our organization of past whose shoulders we stand on and has left us with such legacy and big shoes to fill (no pun intended) that we can build on and add to leave behind as well. With that, my wondering mind was where are they now? My question to you, can you think of someone of those past years that you have not seen, or heard from or about that perhaps you can send a note or thinking of you card to let her know that she has not been forgotten? I certainly did, my list is l-o-n-g (whew), and as the seed was planted with the Chaplains on Zoom they mentioned quite a few they can recall as well and now has as work in progress. Having said that, I encourage you to identify someone in your Unit, Department or National of past meetings, that you have not seen or heard from and try to reach out and get in touch- a card, a phone call or a visit, if possible, I’m sure will be greatly welcomed. We realize that even with our sophisticated technology, communication is one of our greatest assets and biggest issue within all of our units but perhaps some of you have some ideas to share as to how we can capture updates of numbers and email addresses or other status of those long missed Auxiliary members. Let us know-we’ll be waiting.

As we celebrate various religious observances, I located a website that lists religious observances for 2023 that may be of your interest-hope this helps: VISIT OBSERVANCES WEBSITE HERE

March Birthdays: Happy, Happy Birthday to all of March Birthday Celebrants! May the good Lord keep on blessing you with many more birthdays to come with abundant favor and the desires of your heart.

Lastly, although the environment has been forecasted otherwise, the calendar reflects that Spring is just around the corner, according to the Spring equinox, 20 March 2023 at 5:24 PM DT until 20 June 2023, when Summer starts. In thinking about that, I came across the following to share with you as it was shared with me some years ago-you may already be familiar with it:

                                                THE GARDEN

“Come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses…”

For The Garden of Your Daily Living:

Plant Three Rows of Peas:

1. Peace of Mind 2. Peace of Heart 3. Peace of Soul

Plant Four Rows of Squash:

 1. Squash Gossip 2. Squash Indifference 3. Squash Grumbling  4. Squash Selfishness

Plant Four Rows of Lettuce: 1. Lettuce be Faithful 2. Let Us be Kind 3. Lettuce be Patient  4. Lettuce really love one another

No Garden is Without Turnips: 1. Turnip for meetings 2. Turnip for service 3.Turnip to help one another

To Conclude Our Garden, We Must Have THYME: 1. Thyme for Each Other 2. Thyme for family 3. Thyme for Friends

Water freely with PATIENCE and Cultivate with LOVE. There is much FRUIT in your garden because you Reap what you Sow. You/we are encouraged to move forward in UNITY-TOGETHERNESS, just as God’s soil, seed, water and the natural fertilizer He provides works together to produce the bounty of blessings we so graciously and deliciously enjoy, so can we. And while in the garden alone to listen to hear the voice of God through the beauty of His nature.

NOTE from webmaster: Please continue Chaplain Gilliard's beautiful April message:

From the Desk of the National Chaplain

April 2023

Greetings all. I hope that everyone had an eventful and joyous celebration of these past few weeks’ events becoming refreshed, revived, restored and reflective in the Lord's blessings of John 3:16, 17. Whatever your religion cultural celebration was/is during this season:

Happy Resurrection Sunday, Happy Passover celebration, Happy Ramadan, Happy Spring or

Happy Day- may you have peace, joy and love abundantly!

I am humbly asking for you to consider this article to be somewhat of a continuance of March’s article. In it was shared suggested seeds for planting in your garden which brings me to the saying: “Bloom Where You Are Planted. (BWYAP)” I located information on this statement which is an idiom created by The Bishop of Geneva, Saint Francis de Sales and is quite power filled:

“Truly charity has no limit; for the love of God has been poured into our hearts by His

Spirit dwelling in each one of us, calling us to a life of devotion and inviting us to bloom

in the garden where He has planted and directing us to radiate the beauty and spread the fragrance of His Providence.”

BWYAP, and in His time you may also be transplanted thus continuing in, producing and sharing the wonderful harvest of His fruit of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control,” (Gal 5:22-23), enriched with compassion and humor as He enables you and you allow Him. In time you will not see just yourself grow but how the relationship with our Creator and others will blossom and mature into that being His purpose, just for you. Even though at times there may be a few challenges, conflicts or roadblocks, I’d like to encourage you to keep the faith, embrace the Everlasting arms of and stay focused on the God Who loves you, trust Him to lead, encourage, nurture, empower you through life’s journey. Remember to Whom you are anchored and rooted. Just like the seeds planted in the garden, wait on the Lord, soak up His goodness and your confirmation that you are accomplishing great good and see yourself grow and bloom-in His time.

April Birthdays: Happy, Happy Birthday to all of April Birthday Celebrants! May the good Lord keep on blessing you with many more birthdays to come with abundant favor and the desires of your hearts.

Please join in prayer:

Heavenly Loving Father God,

In reverence and humility, we come before Your throne of grace and mercy with praise, honor and glory and thanksgiving to You. Thank You Lord for being our source, our refuge, our strength. Thank You Lord that in Your Holy Word and each other we can find reassurance, comfort, hope and we by fixing our eyes and ears upon You, trusting You and leaning not to our own understanding but through our Savior. Have mercy upon us Lord as we seek Your face, humble ourselves before You; teach us Lord and continue to guide us showing us what is good as You are and what You have required us to do-to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with You, and as we ask for forgiveness, thank You Father for Your guidance. We lift up unto You Lord the thousands who have been affected by the seeming like ongoing environmental, atmospheric changes all over the world and of their creating many needs and concerns to be met. Lord God, please protect those who are providing assistance-keep them safe. Bless those who are mourning personal losses and for those in Hospice Care as our Former President Carter-you know each by name Lord; and for the ongoing increase of lives that belongs to you being taken by someone else’s decision and the many crimes against each other-have mercy Father; we ask You to strengthen families (us) and be their (our) rock as they (we) continue in hope and faith in You Lord. Help us Father to love and forgive others as we would want and as You love and forgive us beyond measure. Grant us Father also please, an extra measure of patience as we go through the different processes of changes and issues in this life. We ask for You to continue to bless our Auxiliary as we move forward in planning our 90th National Convention. Thank You for hearing our prayers and meeting us at our needs and concerns according to Your purpose. Thank You for Your power and Your immeasurably love, Your sweet, amazing grace and mercy that endures forever, we declare in Your Holy Name. AMEN

Stay beautiful, stay blessed! Numbers 6:24-26
