National President

Fran Holtgreven

The Association of the U.S. Army’s 2024 Annual Meeting and Exposition kicks off Monday in Washington, D.C.. The theme this year is “Transforming for a Complex World.” This year’s event is October 14-16 at the Walter E Washington Convention Center. The three-day meeting will feature addresses and professional development forums from Army and DoD leaders. Attending will be the Army Secretary, Army Chief of Staff and Sgt. Maj. Of the Army. More than 1,000 delegates from 89 countries are scheduled to attend the meeting, along with 12 ambassadors. There will be more than 775 exhibits spread over five halls.

I will be leaving for D.C. late Saturday* to attend and represent the Auxiliary along with the Commander, Sr. Vice and Jr. Vice Commander of the MOPH. I feel this is an excellent time to show “who, what, when, where and why” the Military Order of the Purple Auxiliary Departments and Units in the country are doing to help our Patriots and Veterans. I also believe we can help with our membership challenge, by letting Military Personnel who have been wounded in combat, and their family members know there is an organization to join, that can and will help them with the challenges they are going through. This will be a way to help with funding. There will be many companies that will be in attendance promoting their products. Fund raising will also be a priority by speaking and informing these companies what the Auxiliary is doing to help Veterans and how wonderful it would be to help our organization with grants, monies etc. to keep helping the Veterans who have given so much for the United States.

Brochures will be handed out that give a synopsis of what the MOPH Auxiliary mission statement is, why membership matters, and our services. There is a QR code that will go directly to our website, where a membership application is available.

I have heard that approximately 80,000 people are expected to attend meetings and the exhibits during the three days. It will be long days, but my expectations are high. I am excited and nervous and honored to represent the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary.

I guess my challenge this week will be “I will not limit my challenges but will challenge my limits.”

Please keep all our Auxiliary members who have been in the path of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in our thoughts and prayers. If you hear from Patriot or Auxiliary members who need help, please contact your National Officers so we can reach out to them.

Hope Endures, Resilience RISING

As we navigate the aftermath of the most recent hurricanes, we find ourselves drawing on deep reserves of strength and resilience. The destruction left in the wake of these storms is a stark reminder of nature’s power, but also of our country’s unwavering spirit. In this challenging time, we also observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a period dedicated to raising awareness, supporting those affected, and celebrating the progress made in the fight against breast cancer; many thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected and many offerings of unwavering support to those rebuilding their lives.

Both the recovery from a storm and the battle against breast cancer require immense courage and hope. Just as we come together to rebuild our homes and communities, we unite to support those facing breast cancer. The journey through treatment and recovery is often loaded with uncertainty, much like the path to rebuilding after a hurricane. Yet, in both scenarios, hope endures and resilience shines through.

We have seen incredible acts of kindness and solidarity in the wake of the hurricanes, and similar acts of support and compassion are vital for those affected by breast cancer. Whether it’s through donations, volunteering, or simply offering a listening ear, every gesture counts. Let us wear our pink ribbons with pride, participate in awareness events, and support organizations dedicated to breast cancer research and patient care.

Hope is a powerful force that drives us to continue the fight, to support one another, and to believe in a brighter tomorrow. As we rebuild our communities and support those battling breast cancer, let us RISE UP in solidarity, carry abundant hope in our hearts and spread it to those around us.

Happy Fall you all...The hurricane victims are in need of prayer and if possible, financial help through your local Red Cross. I wish that their strength and resilience be as strong as the hurricanes that went through their areas.

I am half way through the Auxiliary boxes, finishing past convention minutes (1937 through 2023) and paperwork of the Units and Departments that have closed. It has been rough at times pulling out steel staples or removing glue from edges so that they can be fed through the scanner. I still have 5 boxes to work through...seems that most of those are financial records. This is an effort to place all of this onto thumb drives for easy storage and access to our history.

As some have read, I am stepping away from the Secretary's position at the end of this term. Please consider stepping up and becoming the next National Secretary. I will help you get started as soon as you want to begin learning the tricks of the position. Please let Teviah (Sr. Vice President) that you are interested in becoming the next National Secretary. A bit of history...I had heard that my first President was looking for someone and then approached her and volunteered. She was thrilled and I hope I have served the following 12 with respect that anyone holding the Presidency deserves.

See you on ZOOM Thursday, October 17.

As you make your plans for honoring our Veterans on Veterans Day please send a report and if you wish please attach a picture to me.  Hopefully you have arranged for some of our Veterans to speak with school children if the Veteran is able to. Please make sure to let all of our Patriots know, how much we appreciate all that they did for us. And honor them also.

Volunteers and VAVS Reps and Deps. October is the month that your Chiefs at your VA's are supposed to prepare the MOPHA (AJR's) Annual Joint Reviews. Please contact them, make an appointment, if need be, and get yours finalized and make sure that I get a copy.

Thank you, for all the virtual hugs, thoughts, prayers, expressed sympathy and acts of kindness since the passing of my sister. All meant a lot to me and were appreciated very much. God Bless you all!

(FIND ME! I look like this but you'll have to find my hidden version to win a prize!

Remember, find the hidden hot-air balloon within each issue of General Orders. It will look like the photo in my article (pictured) but you will need to find the "hidden" version. The image will have the words "find me!" written on it.

When you find it, email me with the location, before Wednesday October 16th at 10PM EST. A name will be drawn from those lucky enough to have found the hot air balloon. The winner will be announced during Zoom and a prize will be awarded.

Fall is here. The leaves are turning and it's time to harvest the gardens. This is also a time to think of our veterans in the state nursing community. I know in MN the Department and units send money to the homes for Christmas time. We found out that not all the money sent is going to the veterans. One unit is checking with each home to see what their needs are. Items will be purchased online and sent to eight to nine locations.    Short of cash? The HOV form is online so fill it out and mail it in. Viola drives are a good way also. You can spend 4-5 hours at a location. Run 2-hour shifts. If you schedule it in the beginning of the month people have more money to donate. One person can spend 2 hours at a big gas station and make some quick cash.

I know a lot of you are having your fall department meetings. Enjoy seeing each other once or twice a year. This is a great time to get new ideas , plan events, and see what each unit is doing.

Thank you to all units and departments for getting their forms in. Also please pray for our veterans and members in the hard hit hurricane areas.

Doris Williams

I would like to thank all the Departments and Units within Region 5 for submitting their reports in a timely manner. Working together makes a difference.

There are a lot of things happening during the month of October. One of the most important things is Breast Cancer Awareness. Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women, but it also can happen in men. Let’s not forget to get our mammograms faithfully.

Voting is an important right that we all have. Don’t forget to vote and remember early voting starts this month. Of course, Halloween is bringing up the rear during the month. Please look out for all the young trick or treaters on your neighborhoods. Continue to pray for our patriots and family that have been affected by the hurricanes in North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.

To my Region 4 family: The last few weeks have been difficult for many in our region and yet the resilience of our members is evident. The devastating storms have reeked havoc in areas not typically victims of such storms and lives have been changed forever. Viewing the destruction reminds everyone how precious life is and how quickly things can change. Heartbreaking losses are met with determination to stand firm and work together to restore and rebuild. Concern is voiced, prayers are lifted, material needs met, encouraging messages sent and love shared everywhere . Our Region 4 understands service and sacrifice- as does each member of our MOPHA organization. Service, not self, is our mantra and describes our military Patriots as it is through the service and sacrifice of these men and women, that we can live in the “land of the free and home of the brave”. It is the kindness, generosity and caring spirit of our MOPHA that moves us forward, even as tragedy tries to stop us. I am proud to be a part of such an organization - one that I can proudly call family! May God bless our nation, our organization and each of my extended family. Love and prayers to my sisters and brothers of the Purple Heart! Kay Jo

October 2024

NOTE: THIS SUBMISSON HAS BEEN AMENDED FROM the ORIGINAL GENERAL ORDERS SENT ON MONDAY MORNING :

I am greatly saddened to share with you that I was informed today of the passing of a beloved Auxiliary sister, Sherry Kramer, Department of Michigan. Sherry transitioned to her Heavenly Home on Friday, October 11, 2024. The Chaplain's request in the General Orders is being amended from get well cards to sympathy cards. Sherry can now be considered as being healed on the other side of Heaven as we pray for her eternal rest in God's presence. Cards of condolence and care to he beloved husband, children, grandchildren, and family members. Let us join in prayers with her Department of Michigan Chaplain and membership to seek strength and comfort in their sorrow and joy in their precious memories, in His Holy Name. Amen.

"God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." (KJV Revelation 21:4)

As we are all aware, families have been affected not by just one devastating hurricane but two plus several tornadoes that have uprooted and changed the lives of millions of people. The impact has been overwhelming to say the least but we know that it is not for us to take on as our burden but for us to take an action of faith to take to the Lord in prayer. We can also help by remaining faithful in prayer, making donations of needed items/products, or financial donations if so lead to do so through established credentialed organizations. As mentioned once before, just SMILE, it can be very encouraging. And, TRUST GOD in everything!

Prayer Request: This is your Time-it will be ‘Your Prayer’; please join in:

“They were all continually united in prayer.” (Acts 1:14)

And in closing for now Father God, thank You for being our Heavenly Father Whom by Your presence is established. We humbly give You the honor, glory and praise for being so loving, kind, generous and forgiving to us, with us. We are so grateful for Your presence in our daily lives comforting us when we are discouraged, grieving or sad; we are grateful for Your reassuring and calming us when we feel doubt or alone, afraid or ignored; we are grateful for Your giving us steadfast hope and healing when all else seems like despair and fate to us; we thank You for our families and friends as well as others who cares on this side of Heaven. We lift up the effects of the environmental events and its aftermath as well as all of the events of turmoil creating pain and anguish we’re experiencing to Your Sovereignty, claiming Your joy, comfort and peace that surpasses all human understanding, thank You. Thank You for being our anchor in the midst of every storm. Lord, continue to teach us how to be still and know that You are GOD who sits high and looks low as the Omnipotent One. For all of the aforementioned and other requests known only to You, we submit and place them in your loving hands of care. We ask that You will protect those who are providing rescue aid and all other volunteer assistance and agencies in those devastated areas safety as You use them as Your earthly hands and feet, thank You Father. We thank You for hearing our prayers and meeting us at our needs and concerns of our soul, mind and strength according to Your purpose for us. We pray that America will bless You by our faith-in- action. Thank You for Your power and Your immeasurably love, Your sweet, amazing grace and mercy that endures forever, we declare in Your Holy and Powerful Name. AMEN.

hope in Him!” (Lamentations 3:22-24)

Many of you will be attending Mid-Winnter Conventions in the next few months. This is the perfect time to report deaths into your Chaplain. Even if the death occurred years ago. It is important to honor each departed member during our annual memorial service held during our national convention. The easiest way to do this is to visit our website at www.PurpleHeartAuxiliary.org and hover over the Members Only tab. Then click "Forms". The death reporting form is simple and easy to complete. However, if you do need help, we will be happy to assist you.

WELCOME TO OUR PURPLE HEART FAMILY!

A word from your webmaster

Friends, we have new brochures courtesy of President Fran's endeavors. She will be representing us in Washington DC this week and will have the brochures, with membership links, on her vendor table.

A copy of the brochure is listed below but we will have them available for distribution when she gets back home.

Originally, our website was supposed to be under construction during the month of October. We are postponing the updates until early-November. It will not be completely shut down; however, links may be broken. Please bear with us while we update the website. Our webstore will be shut down for inventory editing. If there is something you need before November 15th, please let us know.

And lastly, my thoughts are with all of our Purple Heart Families who have been affected by recent earthquakes, fires, tornadoes, and of course hurricanes. Having endured hurricane Katrina, I remember the feeling of helplessness knowing that all of our belongings would be "gone" in only a few hours. For those who don't know how or why I became a member of the MOPHA, it was because of hurricane Katrina.

Back then, in 2005, I had a flip phone. Our cellular service was non-existent for what seemed like weeks but when the phones did ring, one of the first calls was from Patriot Ricky Jackson of Chapter 504 in Lafayette. He and his wife Judy were trying to find my parents to make sure they were ok. I told him my parents were living with me since they had 14 feet of water in their home, and their lake house was just gone, as if it just disappeared. He stated that he had shelter, food, water, and clothes for them. In the midst of despair and shock, I knew that I wanted to belong to this organization who was so generous and genuinely concerned for our well-being. It was one of the best phone calls I have ever had. This verified that our Purple Heart families share a bond so strong that it can never be broken. These times are challenging for our Brothers and Sisters who have suffered in these recent events. Let's remember to be there for them as they put the pieces back together and begin the process of rebuilding.

We have A LOT of exciting patriotic holidays coming up. Photographs can be sent to PNP Amanda Flener for our social media posts. Send photos, news, and events to Amanda at AFlener1@gmail.com

A reminder that anyone can submit photos, articles, or notices to the Purple Heart Magazine. The deadline for the November/December issue was October 15, 2024 but there is a possibility for late submissions. Send your submissions ASAP to Publications@Purpleheart.org.

We all know Mother Nature has caused and continues to threaten widespread devastation across our Nation and the world releasing multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires. Many of these horrific events have taken place in areas not previously impacted while others repeatedly hit the same areas over and over. These events affect Veterans and Veterans directly or indirectly and some of them are our families, personal friends, Brothers and Sisters, neighbors, and the communities we live in and who support us.

In these challenging times, the Order's leadership teams at all levels are actively working to provide critical disaster relief assistance to those most affected by these natural disasters. They are working closely with local authorities and partners to identify the most pressing needs and to distribute resources efficiently and effectively.

The MOPH Fund, a 501.c.3 nonprofit organization, whose mission is to raise funds for the Order's programs is asking for your help. We urgently ask that if you can, please help by making a donation (large or small, every bit helps) to the MOPH Fund today! Unfortunately, natural disasters like those we are currently experiencing are not one-time events so please consider making our donation a recurring one.

We understand transparency and accountability are paramount when it comes to charitable giving. Rest assured that your donation will be used solely for the Order's disaster relief efforts. Your donations will be held by the Fund in a restricted disaster relief account until the National Commander asks the Fund to release them to support your fellow veterans and their families grappling with the aftermath of these catastrophes.

The devastation caused by any disaster, natural or made-made, is immense, and the road to recovery will be long and challenging. However, by coming together as a compassionate community, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our fellow veterans and their families during this time of crisis.

To make your tax-deductible donation, please visit the MOPH Fund website (https://www.mophfund.org/donate#Donate) and scroll to the bottom of the page or scan the QR Code below . If you are using a computer, under "Additional Information" use the arrow (^) to select "Disaster Relief" from the dropdown list of the Order's programs. If using a cell phone, the programs will already be shown, and you can select "Disaster Relief" from the list.

Every donation, regardless of the amount, will have a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by the disaster. We deeply appreciate your immediate attention and support in this urgent matter, as we remain committed to assisting our fellow veterans during times of hardship.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication and standing by our heroes when they need us most. Together, we can bring hope, healing, and assistance to those who have selflessly served our nation.

If you have any questions please contact Patriot Larry Leighton, MOPH Fund Treasurer (treasurer@mophfund.org or 844-MOPHFUND (667-4386)).

Yours in Patriotism,
