Streaming Now: New Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Corrections Podcast

The Opioid Response Network (ORN) has launched a new podcast, MOUD in Corrections, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the opioid epidemic, medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and justice-involved individuals.

In the U.S., more than 1.5 million arrests are made for drug violations annually and 1 in 5 people are incarcerated because of a drug related offense. However, in recent years the justice system has started to change its approach to incarcerated individuals with opioid use disorder to be more consistent with those having other chronic relapsing diseases.

The podcast series, developed by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network, explores this shift, highlights the critical and evolving role the justice system plays in addressing the opioid epidemic and emphasizes the importance of understanding that a substance use disorder is a disease of the brain. Available for Apple, Spotify and other apps. Listen here.

ORN and the Oregon Public Health Dept. Partner with Schools to Deliver Prevention Programming

Do you work schools or with with adolescents in substance use disorder prevention? October is Substance Misuse Prevention Month and Youth Substance Use Prevention Month. This is a time to highlight how prevention strengthens protective factors and reduces risk factors in individuals, families, schools, communities, and across society. Below is a case study illustrating how ORN can help others in this work.

Recently, ORN partnered with the Columbia County Public Health Department in Oregon and local high schools and middle schools to deliver prevention programming focused on marijuana, fentanyl and vaping. The work was part of an overall effort to establish a relationship between the school district and health department. The result was a successful series of pep rallies with local police, EMS, peer support staff, school nurses, superintendents and mayors who talked about substance use and local support services for students who may be struggling. New Resources for Hospitalists Caring for Patients with Opioid Use Disorder

Hospitalists often encounter patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) but may lack the knowledge to assess patients with suspected OUD, manage withdrawal, initiate treatment in the hospital, or link patients to care in the outpatient setting. Hospitalists and other hospital-based clinicians require the knowledge and strategies to competently treat, fluently facilitate patient-centered conversations about treatment, and support care transition plans and safe discharges.

In partnership with ORN, the Society of Hospital Medicine developed these resources to assist hospitalist-led teams in the implementation of interventions to improve the care of hospitalized patients with OUD with the use of FDA approved medications. Read more.
