2020 Season of Giving

It has been a challenging year for everyone struggling through this unprecedented global pandemic. The COVID-19 virus has impacted us all and turned the world upside down for the past 10 months, and yet we are heartened by the community’s resilience and optimism as we move into the New Year. While the past year has been difficult for our sector, MOV is focused on the path forward and year ahead.

Please support the Museum of Vancouver’s Annual Fundraising Campaign with a tax-deductible donation that will help us to continue our work and deepen our understanding of Vancouver through stories, objects, and shared experiences.
We are Hiring!
Closing date: December 15, 2020

Museum of Vancouver is seeking Temporary Part-Time personnel to join our team in support of its newest exhibition A Seat at the Table. This position is funded with the support of Canada Summer Jobs.

Museum Interpreters, in tandem with MOV Visitor Experience staff, provide the first point of contact with MOV visitors. Knowledgeable and engaging, they play a vital part in ensuring a rewarding visitor
experience.

Since 2015, the Museum of Vancouver has worked with Dr. Kate Hennessy at Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology and students in the class Moving Images (IAT 344) to develop their video and documentary skills by creating high quality media for inclusion in MOV's award-winning museum exhibitions.

#IsolatingTogetherMOV was a new challenge, as students still had the exciting opportunity to learn from the curators at MOV, to connect with members of our community, and to produce work for inclusion in an exhibition that will be seen by large numbers of museum visitors. But the course by necessity had to be completely revised for distance learning and supporting physical distancing.

We wondered, how could we bring our current challenges and anxieties into a collective space for sharing, inspiration, and creativity? How could we use the tools available to us at home to create compelling digital stories? How could the stories we tell to each other inspire and support others? How are these stories important records of an "unprecedented time"? What stories will be we able to tell for a future exhibition about the COVID-19 pandemic experience at the Museum of Vancouver? How could we contribute to #IsolatingTogetherMOV?
The official awards ceremony will premier on the Museum of Vancouver YouTube channel today (Friday, December 4, 2020) at 10:45am!
Not able to make the live premier? Not to worry. You can simply view all the videos on the playlist here
A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia
Now on view!

The Museum of Vancouver and the University of British Columbia proudly present a new feature exhibition, A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia. This exhibition explores historical and contemporary stories of Chinese Canadians in BC and their struggles for belonging. It looks to food and restaurant culture as an entry point to feature stories that reveal the great diversity of immigrant experience and of the communities immigrants develop.
Just over two weeks ago we held the opening ceremony for A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia over Facebook Live. The exhibition officially opened to the public the following day!

Speakers included Squamish Nation Spokesperson Khelsilem, MOV Board Chair Eddy Adra, Chinese Canadian Museum Board Chair Grace Wong, Exhibition Co-curators Viviane Gosselin, Henry Yu, and Denise Fong, and MOV CEO Mauro Vescera.

Love, genetic and ancestral relations are all characteristics that can define family. To some, groups of people sharing a cause or a passion and supporting each other also qualify as families.
Share a photo of your “family” and tag #SATMyFamily. Your story and portrait will be featured in the physical A Seat at the Table MOV exhibition and online. If you do not have a public social media account, you can submit your photo here.

On view until December 9, 2020 in the MOV Studio

This micro-exhibition in the Museum of Vancouver studio called c̓əc̓əwitəl̕ | helping each other | ch’áwatway, provides an opportunity for the 2019 YVR Art Foundation scholarship recipients to exhibit their final works. This exhibition explores themes of resilience, memory and identity, through reconnection with ancestral knowledge and lands. The title, written in both hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh snichim, shows our respect for the teachings of our host communities – the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations while acknowledging that this exhibition is taking place within their shared traditional territories.

Lattimer Gallery Presents...
Annual Charity Bentwood Boxes
Until December 5, 2020

For the past fourteen years Lattimer Gallery has organized an event to help support the Urban Native Youth Association, a Vancouver organization which has been providing prevention-focused programs and services to Native youth since 1988. UNYA’s work includes advocacy, community development, and providing youth with meaningful opportunities to provide input into their programs and services.

All of the work in the creation of these small cedar boxes is donated: the boxes are steam-bent and constructed by Métis/Cree artist James Michels; the promotion and collected funds is donated by Lattimer Gallery; and all the artwork is donated by the artists. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Urban Native Youth Association.
