Prepare for Arriving

Current Conditions in Syracuse, NY

  • The City of Syracuse and New York State Department of Transportation are continuing infrastructure improvements in areas surrounding Syracuse University.
  • Some construction activity remains underway near campus, including areas adjacent to Brewster, Boland, Sadler and Lawrinson Halls, as well as student move-in routes.
  • For students living in Brewster and Boland: While sidewalks and pedestrian pathways are available, conditions may continue to change as work is completed. Please follow posted signage and use designated walkways.
  • Temporary gravel areas may remain in some locations until final sidewalk work is completed.

Guidance upon Arrival

  • Please allow extra time when traveling to and from campus during move-in.
  • Follow directions provided by move-in staff, volunteers, Parking and Transportation Services and public safety personnel.
  • Exercise caution in and around active construction areas and use designated pedestrian routes whenever possible.
  • We appreciate your patience as these improvements are completed and remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming move-in experience for students and families.

Please Note: If you need to adjust your move-in time, you may move-in unassisted after 5 p.m., Aug. 17-19, 2026.

Move In Instructions

Aug. 17-19 2026

Students scheduled to arrive on Aug. 17-19, 2026 have specific instructions that are unique to each residence hall. When you arrive to campus, ensure you are arriving to your residence hall's holding line, not the residence hall itself.

You will find arrival logistics information in Step 7: Arrival to Campus and the Move-In Process.

Tips for a Successful Move In

These tips and tricks will ensure you have a smooth move in day.

  • As you pack your belongings, you should only bring the necessities. Overpacking or bringing unnecessary items could make for a more stressful move-in experience as well as additional trips to your vehicle. To help with your packing process, refer to the New Student Checklists.
  • You do not need your heavy winter items yet! This will take up unnecessary space in your bags and vehicle. Pack for warm weather (through September) and crisp, cool weather (October-November) is best, and bring your necessary winter items after the Thanksgiving break.
  • You should plan to put as many items into a move-in bin as possible at the residence hall. The fewer trips up to your room, the better.
  • Be patient. New Student Move-In is a multi-step process, and you should arrive to campus expecting to encounter some traffic and lines to the residence hall.

We do the best we can to ensure you have the best experience arriving to campus, and we are so excited to welcome you to your new home!
