Carolina MPA Career Digest December 2021
Good Morning,

I hope you all are having a wonderful break from classes, and maybe a break from work. Celebrating the new year always is a good time to reflect and debrief the year. In sailing (one last time I promise - I'll have a new analogy next year), at the end of a race you may reflect or debrief with your crew (or alone if you are sailing alone), what you could have done differently, how the wind came across the course differently than you thought, what went well, all so you can improve in the next race. Once on shore you also may debrief as a fleet, what did the top boats do differently than others (that usually means me listening to what my parents did as we try to keep up!), but also realizing that you may have made some good decisions and saw similar things. But that debrief is a time to individually and collectively reflect on the race, a regatta, and overall come together!

Your career journey should also take on those similar debriefs and the end of a year is a great time to do that. Your debrief may be individual or with your "crew" (your small group around you, whether that is your family, close friends, or a mentor) or it may be in a larger group, hearing what others are thinking and then reflecting on what you may want to do differently or the same moving forward. While a debrief tends to happen at the end, you may need to adjust mid-course and that can be part of a debrief! Know that as you reflect on this year and your career journey in general I am here to debrief, help you reflect, and help you stay the course or change, whichever is best for you!

In this Career Digest, I will share a few professional development opportunities, which will include conferences and workshops, upcoming events, and a few resources.

I am always available to discuss your career goals, help with your Professional Development Plan, and/or review your resume/cover letter, help with your job search, and/or help as you negotiate a job offer. Wherever you are in the program or in your professional journey, I'd love to connect and help you develop your plan for next steps!

Lastly, don't forget to connect to the Microsoft Teams Career Services and Professional Development Team - access teams through Heelmail. We encourage you all to engage in the conversation in the teams group, ask questions, answer questions, share resources, etc. In addition to the team group, I am available for individual chat through MS teams - chat me anytime.

As you all may know, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has been a pillar in the MPA Strategic Plan. We are in the process of developing strategies around our DEI goals and welcome any feedback you have on this.

One DEI-related suggestion that came from students was to create structured identity groups for underrepresented students of similar identities to have a space to connect. After input from various student leaders, faculty and staff of the MPA program, and the Graduate School here at UNC we would like to announce Identity Groups and Interest Groups in the MPA Program.

The identity and Interest Groups are a great way to make connections, build social capital, and engage with others who have similar identities/interests as yourself. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities!

What is LinkedIn Learning?
LinkedIn Learning is an award-winning industry leader in online training, with a digital library of thousands of courses covering a wide range of technical, business, software, and creative topics.

The expansion of hybrid and remote work offers a unique opportunity for local leaders to be innovative.

The 2021 PM editorial calendar focused on the aspects of local government that matter most to its practitioners. From 12 issues, the articles that resonated most with PM readers this year represent a great cross-section of these topics: equity and inclusion, homelessness, housing, policing, ethics, and career development, to name a few.
We invite you to catch up on any of these articles you missed over the past year, or give them another read.
