Good Afternoon,
Happy August! I realize this is the July Career Digest, and I'm sending it in August, on a Monday, not the last Friday of the month, but sometimes things happen that make you adjust and recalibrate. We'll be back to our regularly scheduled last Friday of the month at the end of August, but for now, we're in the beginning of August and I'm writing to you on a Monday!
Adjusting and recalibrating has been a theme of the last year, and honestly will probably never go away. This past year+ we've had to drastically recalibrate how we do things, how services are delivered, and how we interact. And while we may not have those big of changes in the future (who knows!), it is a good reminder that we're constantly adjusting and recalibrating (I do this sailing too - I just had to get it in... I'll stop with the sailing references :)). That can also be something you may experience as you think about your career. Did you think you wanted to do something only to get into it and realize either the organization or type of work wasn't right for you? Now is a great time to consider those questions and we can work together to recalibrate!
In this Career Digest, I will share a few professional development opportunities, which will include conferences and workshops, upcoming events, and a few resources.
In addition to helping as you may explore alternative plans, I am always available to discuss your career goals, help with your Professional Development Plan, and/or review your resume/cover letter, help with your job search, and/or help as you negotiate a job offer. Wherever you are in the program or in your professional journey, I'd love to connect and help you develop your plan for next steps!
Lastly, don't forget to connect to the Microsoft Teams Career Services and Professional Development Team - access teams through Heelmail. We encourage you all to engage in the conversation in the teams group, ask questions, answer questions, share resources, etc. In addition to the team group, I am available for individual chat through MS teams - chat me anytime. This is also a great way to practice your professional communication through chat as many employers utilize teams (or something similar) to stay in touch with employees (even if they're down the hall!).

Our first #NCLGBA21 Conference Recap comes from Kimberly Leonard, Budget Manager at Pender County.
July 21st, I was excited to return to the first in person NCLGBA conference since December 2019. Although the NCLGBA conferences seem to always exhibit a lot of Board generated enthusiasm; this year, you could feel an elevated level of energy erupting from the 157 registered participants, who appeared delighted to have direct contact with fellow budgeteers.

Studies of professional athletes and how rest -- or lack thereof -- affects their performance and likelihood of injury could suggest a different way to think about well-being, writes Dr. Amitha Kalaichandran. Beyond the idea of self-care, "true well-being and healing may rely more often on 'not' doing something -- over-exerting, overperforming, and overworking -- as opposed to 'adding' another trendy 'wellness' element to our routines," Kalaichandran writes.Full Story: Medium (tiered subscription model) (7/13)
