Carolina MPA Career Digest May 2022

Good Morning,

We've had a couple heavy weeks in the US, with two mass shootings. I hope you are taking care of yourself.

When it comes to analogies for career topics and running, I've had a harder time thinking of them this month. Potentially because my thoughts are one some of these hard things happening in the world and our country today. Taking action has been something that helps me to feel like I'm not helpless in a situation. Which is similar to your career, and my running races.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to run in a 10-mile trail race. I'd been running a decent amount leading up to it, and even had a successful race the weekend prior, but realized leading up to the race I wasn't fully prepared, and then it was also going to be so HOT! So I took action in the week leading up to the race. I drank more water, Nuun, and other rehydration drinks. I took it easy on my runs, I prepared for the almost 2 hours of running in 90+ degree heat (and almost 100% humidity), and I adjusted my goals from a PR to just finishing and not feeling awful.

The same can be done in a job search. When your search is going well, your are getting interviews, and offers you can keep moving along as you had been. But if you are applying (or not finding jobs to apply to), and nothing happens, then it is time to adjust, take action and do something different. In the job search that may be evaluating the type of job you are applying to, adjusting your tailoring of your resume and cover letter, or practicing interviewing to see if there is something to modify. Taking action can help you assess where you are in the process, your goals, and help you get to your next step.

In this Career Digest, I will share a few professional development opportunities, which will include conferences and workshops, upcoming events, and a few resources.

I am always available to discuss your career goals, help with your Professional Development Plan, and/or review your resume/cover letter, help with your job search, and/or help as you negotiate a job offer. Wherever you are in the program or in your professional journey, I'd love to connect and help you develop your plan for next steps!

Lastly, don't forget to connect to the Microsoft Teams Career Services and Professional Development Team - access teams through Heelmail. We encourage you all to engage in the conversation in the teams group, ask questions, answer questions, share resources, etc. In addition to the team group, I am available for individual chat through MS teams - chat me anytime.

Again, take care of yourselves, and have a good Memorial Day Weekend.

Allison

Tips on Negotiating a Job Offer

Whether you are reaching the offer stage of a job application or asking for a raise with your current employer, salary negotiations can be tricky. From knowing when to broach the topic to determining market rates, here are some things to keep in mind:

Do your homework. Start by establishing your needs and financial commitments. Then, check online resources and reach out to your network to get an idea of possible salaries.

Time it right. Payment is something you want to avoid mentioning in your cover letter, but you also shouldn’t wait until receiving an offer. Ideally, you can bring it up during a call with the recruiter when you have a better understanding of the nuances of the job.

Provide a range. While you will at some point be talking about an exact figure, you always want to start with a range and leave it to the organization to respond.

The North Carolina Project Portal: Explore Existing Partnership Opportunities, Propose New Ones

The Office of Strategic Partnerships (OSP) recently launched the North Carolina Project Portal, a tool for developing and launching partnerships with government and for bolstering cross-sector collaboration. The Portal includes information about opportunities for partnering with state agencies on their research needs and how to express interest in pursuing those opportunities.

Check the Portal regularly for new opportunities. To request notifications about new opportunities, email partnerships@osbm.nc.gov. Feel free to share with others

As you all may know, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has been a pillar in the MPA Strategic Plan. We are in the process of developing strategies around our DEI goals and welcome any feedback you have on this.

One DEI-related suggestion that came from students was to create structured identity groups for underrepresented students of similar identities to have a space to connect. After input from various student leaders, faculty and staff of the MPA program, and the Graduate School here at UNC we would like to announce Identity Groups and Interest Groups in the MPA Program.

The identity and Interest Groups are a great way to make connections, build social capital, and engage with others who have similar identities/interests as yourself. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities!
