Good Afternoon,
Happy Fall! As the semester gets into full swing, and the weather begins to change, at least in North Carolina, we have the opportunity to continue building upon your career goals and using what you are learning in classes to apply to projects, experiences, and your work.
Using what you are learning to apply to the work you are doing in your projects, experiences, and work is similar to what happens in sailing (I'm going for it!). Each race brings new wind and new conditions, similar to new theories and learning in your classes. But it also brings knowledge that you can apply to the next race. Did a particular side of the race course work well in the previous race, or a particular setting on your sails, that can lead you to apply that learning to the next race. Similar to how you learn new things in your classes, you then have the opportunity to apply that learning through your work, class projects, assistantships, and even just seeing what is going on in your community. Applying theory to practice is an opportunity to see where those theories present themselves in other work you are doing, similar to one side of a race course working out great and trying that theory again (spoiler alert - it sometimes works great, and sometimes that theory doesn't and you go from 1st to 8th - don't ask me how I know!). But always thinking about where the theories you are learning in classes present themselves can help as you continue to gain experience and knowledge throughout the program!
I'm excited to continue our conversations around your professional goals!
In this Career Digest, I will share a few professional development opportunities, which will include conferences and workshops, upcoming events, and a few resources.
I am always available to discuss your career goals, help with your Professional Development Plan, and/or review your resume/cover letter, help with your job search, and/or help as you negotiate a job offer. Wherever you are in the program or in your professional journey, I'd love to connect and help you develop your plan for next steps!
Lastly, don't forget to connect to the Microsoft Teams Career Services and Professional Development Team - access teams through Heelmail. We encourage you all to engage in the conversation in the teams group, ask questions, answer questions, share resources, etc. In addition to the team group, I am available for individual chat through MS teams - chat me anytime. This is also a great way to practice your professional communication through chat as many employers utilize teams (or something similar) to stay in touch with employees (even if they're down the hall!).
