Welcome to the Fall 2019 issue of the California Marine Protected Areas Education and Outreach Newsletter!
In this issue, you will find updates on MPA related projects as well as a variety of events and opportunities for getting involved in the coming months.

California Coastal Cleanup Day
|
|

|
Join more than 60,000 volunteers who will pick up hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables from beaches, lakes, and waterways in California for the 35th annual Cleanup Day! Everyone can participate, no matter what age.
The event isn’t limited to the coastal region. There are cleanups taking place all over California – from coastal areas to Lake Tahoe and from San Diego up to Del Norte County.
The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy. California Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest volunteer event in the US and International Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest volunteer event on the planet!
At last year’s Coastal Cleanup Day, throughout the State of California, 66,535 volunteers removed 839,629 pounds of debris on this day of action. And worldwide, 789,138 volunteers removed over 20 million pounds of trash and debris.

Since January, CMSF staff has been busy conducting MPA outreach across the state to the recreational fishing community, ocean recreation businesses and select interpretive centers. We have successfully completed outreach in all coastal counties with the exception of Del Norte.
We will be conducting a second round of outreach in Spring 2020 and would love to include your resources and recommendations for priority locations!

Digital MPA Resource Compilation

CMSF created waterproof ocean recreation guides to acquaint visitors to the coast, its animal inhabitants and the local protected areas.
Guides are available for the following areas:

- San Mateo
- Santa Cruz
- Moss Landing
- Monterey
- San Luis Obispo
- Santa Barbara & Channel Islands

These guides are excellent for use in ocean recreation businesses, by interpreters and educators, and more!
These are being laminated and bound as a self-guided PPT for use by businesses on the water, docents giving tours, etc. All of the guides are

Ocean Sport Fishing Interactive Map
|
A new
Ocean Sport Fishing Interactive Web Map
designed for use on mobile devices is now available on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website. By clicking on the map, users receive marine protected area and recreational sport fishing regulations for that location. Using the device’s GPS, users will see their position relative to any regulatory boundaries. A fish identification guide and marine management news site round out the major features of the map.

In August, the MPA Collaborative Network hosted a Statewide MPA Collaborative Education and Outreach Forum. The event brought representatives from each of the 14 Collaboratives, state agencies, and ocean enthusiasts together for a day and a half event focused on showcasing all of the Collaborative produced
Small Grant projects
, reviewing current MPA Education and Outreach needs, and collectively brainstorming future project ideas. The MPA CN would like to thank everyone who attended and made this event so successful!

Stargazing at Pigeon Point Light Station

Saturday, September 21 from 7 to 10:30pm
Join a State Park Interpreter after dark to explore the night sky and learn about the history of Pigeon Point Light Station. Watch the movie Saving the Dark at 7pm and then spend an evening gazing at the stars while learning about local life on Earth. Telescopes will be provided by the Santa Cruz Astronomy Club, and topics include astronomy, light pollution, and maritime navigation. Bring water, snacks, warm clothes, and an optional chair or blanket. Meet in the picnic area. Free event.

Welcome Back Monarchs Day at Natural Bridges
|
Natural Bridges State Beach
Sunday, October 13 from 11am to 4pm
Join us in welcoming the monarchs back to the park, where they will spend the winter. Enjoy arts and crafts, active games for kids, live music by the 5Ms, hand-cranked “monarch” pumpkin-flavored ice cream, information booths on monarch butterflies and butterfly gardens, and more! Free event.

Dive into Deep Sea Exploration at the Sanctuary Exploration Center

Join the kick-off of our Science-Saturday Family programs with Deep Sea Exploration!
Kids and adults will learn hands-on how scientists explore the deep sea, design and build their own Remotely Operated Vehicle, then test it in our Deep Sea Canyon Exhibit. This program is open to all ages 6 and up! Kids 6-11 must bring an accompanying adult that does not need to register for the course.
Cost: $28 per youth participant
