Carolina MPA News and Announcements
Student Spotlight: Zainab Baloch
Carolina MPA student Zainab Baloch is a 26-year-old Raleigh native who was a candidate for Raleigh City Council in 2017. Her campaign received national attention and was featured in a National Geographic documentary with Katie Couric titled America Inside Out. Working in policy audit for the Division of Mental Health (DMH) and finishing her last term at UNC, her passion is to bridge the gap between policies and the health services provided statewide. She hopes to help people understand how much local policies directly impact us every day, especially within young people. If you want to stay updated on future runs, follow her @votebaloch on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. A link to the documentary is below.
Baloch is interviewed by Couric during her 2017 campaign.
Fall Immersion Topic Announced

Title: Collaborative Governance and Collective Impact
Faculty: Dr. Ricardo Morse and Dr. John Stephens

Collaboration across boundaries (jurisdiction, sector) is a central aspect of public service leadership today. Complex or “wicked” public problems cannot be adequately addressed by a single agency. Rather, concerted action that leverages the strengths of various stakeholders is required to see results. In public administration, the concept of “collaborative governance” is commonly used to describe this kind of boundary-crossing work, while elsewhere the framework of “collective impact” is used. Utilizing a combination of readings, case studies, and exercises, this course will explore these frames, particularly how they inform our understanding of leadership for collective impact.

Please join us in the fall term in this great 1.5-hour elective course! Dates are Oct. 25-27 in Chapel Hill, NC!
