| | Karla Acevedo’s Resilience: A Journey of Perseverance, Family, and New Beginnings | |
Karla Acevedo is a shining example of resilience and determination. She is now an MPDC alumnus because she purchased a new home. A proud member of the U.S. National Guard, Karla has dedicated her life to serving and protecting her country, all while being a proud Dominican single mother to her young son Mario.
Her story is one of overcoming obstacles, embracing opportunities, and never giving up—no matter the challenges.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Karla came to the United States at four years old with her single mother and four other siblings. As the middle child of five children—and the only girl—Karla quickly learned the value of striving for more. Her upbringing, shaped by her mother's sacrifices and the challenges of being an immigrant, instilled a deep sense of responsibility and ambition.
From a young age, Karla was determined to create a better future for herself and her family. She saw her mother work tirelessly to provide for her and her four other siblings' children and was motivated to follow suit. Her desire to make a difference led her to enlist in the U.S. National Guard, fueled by her passion for helping others. The National Guard allowed Karla to serve her country, protect her community, and be a source of support during times of need. It was a natural fit for someone who wanted to contribute meaningfully.
While serving in the National Guard, Karla also focused on creating a better future for her son. As a mother, she worked tirelessly to provide him with the opportunities she never had growing up. One of her biggest goals was to give him the stability of a permanent home—something she knew would allow them to build a strong foundation for the future.
For Karla, this home represents more than just a place to live—it symbolizes everything she has worked for: her family, her service, and her dedication to creating a better life. It's a space where she can provide stability and love for her son while also offering her mother a place to return to whenever she visits from the Dominican Republic. This home is a foundation for years of shared moments, growth, and the continued pursuit of dreams.
Karla's journey is a reflection of the sacrifices and hard work that define her life. From her early years in the Dominican Republic to her service in the National Guard and her pursuit of homeownership, Karla has continually demonstrated that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible. Her story is one of family, service, and the belief that a home is not just a place—it's a legacy.
In June 2024, Karla's journey took a transformative turn when she was approved and accepted into the Madison Park Next Door Program, a powerful initiative designed to help individuals like Karla achieve the dream of homeownership. The program offers financial support in the form of $100,000 in down payment assistance for properties within Boston and $50,000 for properties outside of the city—making the dream of owning a home much more attainable for those who face financial hurdles. Karla, always determined to give her son a stable and secure home, knew this was an opportunity she couldn't pass up.
However, the road to securing her home was not without its challenges. Karla faced significant hurdles, especially with the financing process. Last-minute loan approval issues led to a change in lenders, adding stress to an already complex situation. To make matters even more challenging, the sellers were pressuring her to close quickly, but due to the last-minute lender change, the closing dates had to be pushed back, creating even more uncertainty. But Karla didn't back down. She remained focused and worked closely with a recommended lender from MPDC, who helped guide her through the process.
Through persistence, resilience, and unwavering determination, Karla was able to close on her new home—a brand-new building in the Boston area. This victory wasn't just for her but for her son Mario. Karla knew that having a permanent place to call home was crucial for providing her child with the stability and security he deserved.
Reflecting on her time as an MPDC resident, Karla is deeply grateful for the support and resources available at The Dewitt Center and the Next Door Program. From financial counseling to homeownership workshops, the MPDC programs helped her navigate the journey to homeownership, empowering her to take the next step in her life.
In addition to the home purchase, Karla will participate in MPDC's "Protect Your Asset" (PYA) program, which will help her create a Living Will to ensure her son's future is protected, leaving him a valuable asset and legacy. MPDC also provides the PYA program, a value of over $600 for just the cost of a $75 deposit. Karla will be connected with a legal professional to help her through the process.
MPDC is incredibly proud of Karla's accomplishments and is thrilled to see her take this next step in her journey. MPDC wishes Karla all the best as she begins this new chapter of her life, knowing that her resilience and hard work will continue to inspire others.
MPDC is excited to offer a range of programs to assist you on your journey, just as we helped Karla to homeownership and financial success. Whether you're looking to buy your first home, improve your financial literacy, or join a supportive community, we have resources available to help you every step of the way.

| | OEP kicks of 2025 with HiSET Term 2! | |
In January, the Opportunity Employment Program was excited to host a full room of enthusiastic students, including 9 new participants, for the Term 2 orientation of HiSET prep classes at MPDC. During orientation, OEP reviewed the course schedule, class policy, and class expectations for the duration of the term. These conversations with young adults helped emphasize program flexibility and highlight the various ways we can support them.
OEP's goal for students is to create an open environment where these young adults feel encouraged and supported as they work to complete their HiSET exams.
Classes are already underway, and students' participation is indicative of a good term to come. MPDC is thrilled to start strong this year with a large cohort full of young adults ready to succeed!

During winter break, MPDC embarked on its first-ever Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) tour, taking 36 high school juniors and seniors from Greater Boston on an educational journey along the East Coast. This trip introduced students to five renowned HBCUs—Morgan State, Delaware State, Howard University, Lincoln University, and Coppin State University—offering them firsthand insight into campus life, academic opportunities, and the rich legacy of these institutions.
Beyond the campus visits, the tour was also a cultural expedition. Students explored the National Museum of African American History & Culture, where they deepened their understanding of African American history, contributions, and struggles for equality. To round out the experience with some well-earned fun, the trip was capped off with a visit to Dave & Buster’s in Baltimore, where students bonded.
This inaugural HBCU tour was an inspiring experience. It left students energized and excited for their future college journeys while reinforcing the cultural and academic
significance of HBCUs.

| | Exciting progress at 639 Warren Street! | |
MPDC is thrilled to announce that its proposed project at 639 Warren Street has cleared two major hurdles in the permitting process! On February 13th, the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) approved the project, followed by a unanimous vote from the Boston Zoning Board of Appeal (ZBA) on March 4th.
These approvals pave the way for 63 much-needed affordable homes and commercial space for two small businesses, transforming a long-vacant corner of Grove Hall into a vibrant community asset.
This milestone was made possible through an extensive community engagement process dating back to early 2023—before MPDC acquired the lot. MPDC has held or attended nearly 30 meetings with close to 400 local residents, incorporating valuable feedback that helped shape the final approved proposal.
MPDC deeply appreciates the support and collaboration of our community members and partners in making this vision a reality!
