St. Kitts has a new prime minister

Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis has a new leader. Dr. Terrance Michael Drew was officially sworn in on August 6, 2022, as the fourth Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Prime Minister Drew and the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) won the general elections, which were held on August 5, taking six of the 11 contested seats.

“It was indeed an esteemed pleasure to be given the opportunity by you the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to be your Prime Minister. I consider it an office of service and I also recognize that it is an office that I do not own, and I am only here at the behest of the people,” said Prime Minister Drew.

August 8, 2022 was declared a public holiday in the Federation in recognition of the SKNLP victory.

Recognizing the close bonds which both African Americans and Hispanic Americans share with the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands participated for the first time in the premier conference for journalism education, career development, networking, and industry innovation, attracting leaders and influencers in journalism, media, technology, business, health, arts, and entertainment.

Thousands of top journalists, media executives, journalism educators, public relations professionals, and students from the United States and further afield gathered in Las Vegas, August 3-7, 2022.

The spirit of carnival was on full display during a Cayman Islands Department of Tourism-sponsored Founders’ reception, and Director of Tourism Rosa Harris provided a substantive destination update while participating in a stimulating discussion on building bridges between the African American and Caribbean communities.

TikTok: New Age of Social Media

TikTok is one of the newer social media platforms, starting its journey in 2016 and quickly becoming a sensation due to its short clips and viral content. TikTok became the most downloaded application in 2019 and 2020 with over 1.2 billion monthly users. Here’s why TikTok is a marketing imperative:

  • Strategy: Platform demands an out-of-the-box strategy. Content that has relevance to trending topics needs to be produced every day. TikTok requires an all-hands-on-deck production and content strategy with a focus on ideation and creative execution.
  • Publishing: There’s no fixed formula for TikTok posting as long as brands are utilizing the full power of riding trends. Content publishing is spontaneous and even sharing video drafts is a “thing” on TikTok.
  • Influencers: Influencer marketing works great on TikTok and with innovative content creators there’s no shortage of quality partnerships. Influencers are key for word-of-mouth marketing and raising awareness about a subject.
  • Advertising: TikTok ads provide easy access to a vast target audience with a variety of specific and wide targeting options. TikTok constantly releases new forms of ads on the platform, but in-feed ads, branded hashtags and video effects have shown solid ROI through the years.

Medical Moment

Poliomyelitis (polio) is a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by poliovirus, which can infect a person’s spinal cord, leading to paralysis.

Polio is highly infectious and primarily affects children under 5 years of age. The interval from infection to onset of symptoms is usually 7–10 days but can range from 4–35 days.

It is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the fecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g., contaminated water or food).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 90% of people infected with polio experience no or mild symptoms and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 25% of people will experience flu-like symptoms.

There is no cure for polio, but it is preventable through safe and effective vaccination.
