From the Sea Suite celebrates women shaping Caribbean tourism

The Caribbean Tourism Organization’s 2026 edition of From the Sea Suite is now live online, celebrating the women helping shape the present and future of Caribbean tourism.

This year’s publication spotlights women leaders from across the region — from ministers, CEOs and entrepreneurs to emerging professionals and the next generation of tourism leaders.

Among the highlights is a cover story on Marsha Henderson, St. Kitts and Nevis minister of tourism and recipient of the 2025 Minister of Tourism Award, along with features on CTO leaders and Secretary-General Award recipients. The edition also showcases women-led businesses and explores stories of mentorship, resilience, leadership and professional growth.

More than a collection of profiles, From the Sea Suite 2026 reflects the influence, progress and impact of women across Caribbean tourism and the important role they continue to play in moving the sector forward.

CMEx to honor American Airlines executive José A. Freig

José A. Freig

This week, the Caribbean Media Exchange (CMEx) spotlights José A. Freig, another distinguished leadership laureate who will be celebrated at the 2026 CMEx Leadership Awards and Fundraiser on Sunday, Dec. 6, at Loews Coral Gables Hotel in the Miami area.

Freig is vice president of international and inflight dining operations at American Airlines. He oversees airport operations at more than 120 international destinations, business partner operations, and the delivery and performance of inflight dining on more than 6,200 daily departures from over 125 catering locations — all focused on providing an exceptional customer experience.

His career at American has spanned several of the airline’s most complex global operations. He previously served as vice president of international, contact center operations and service recovery, driving greater efficiency across the airline’s airports and contact centers.

Freig also led operations and commercial activities for Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America, working closely with team members and regional partners to strengthen American’s position as the leading U.S. airline serving those markets. His other leadership roles have included interim president of cargo, oversight of premium guest services, managing director of Latin America and Caribbean operations, and managing director of international government affairs and chief security officer.

He began his airline career with America West Airlines in 1997 and later served with Siemens Government Technologies as a security technology and screening liaison to federal agencies.

Freig serves on the board of directors of Hostage US and is affiliated with the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association, the U.S. Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council and the Orange Bowl Committee.

The 2026 CMEx Leadership Awards and Fundraiser is powered by Platinum Sponsor, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, with Carnival Corporation serving as Gold Sponsor.

Major sponsors include The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission, Marketplace Excellence Corporation, Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board, and the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.

Additional sponsors supporting the cause include Coco Palm (St. Lucia), Fond Doux Eco Resort (St. Lucia), Ladera Resort (St. Lucia), Mount Cinnamon Beach & Wellness Resort (Grenada), GRUPO PUNTACANA (The Westin Puntacana Resort), Tropical Attractions, and Vanessa James Media.

Quotable Caribbean

“The pace at which innovation is driving greater sustainability and environmental responsibility across the industry stands out most. In parallel, the cruise sector continues to be a powerful engine of economic growth for destinations, generating jobs, supporting local businesses and fostering long-term development. The combination of these two forces positions the industry for a very strong and sustainable future.” — Gabriel Aviles, Manager, Port Operations (Caribbean, Europe, Central & Latin America), Carnival Cruise Line

Quotable Caribbean

Tink Bout It

Are we preparing for the future — or protecting the past?

Sometimes the biggest obstacle to progress is not failure, but familiarity.

We hold on to systems, habits and ways of thinking because they worked before — even when the world around us has changed.

The danger is that, while we are busy protecting what feels comfortable, others are adapting, experimenting and moving ahead.

Progress does not require abandoning everything that came before. But it does require the courage to ask whether what worked yesterday is the best choice for tomorrow.

This week, identify one habit, process or assumption you have been holding on to simply because it is familiar. Question it. Test a better way. Small changes made intentionally today can determine how ready we are for tomorrow.
