Superintendent's Message

Dear Mt. Pleasant Community,

We are grateful for your support to make this new school year a safe and successful experience. While working hard every day to achieve academic goals and advance our students’ education, children, staff and families are doing their part to protect everyone’s health and keep our schools open.

It is important that we collectively continue to stay focused and committed to Covid-19 safety protocols. Wearing masks and washing hands are crucial. Daily health screenings are also key. If a student is sick, please keep them at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19. To provide an extra layer of safety, the district is starting a program to offer optional testing for students on a regular basis. At the same time, we encourage vaccination for every eligible member of the family to fight the pandemic.

One critical development this year is that students now have access to free and nutritious meals regardless of their household income. This is part of a historic initiative by the state of California that will ensure that children can reach their full potential without being hungry. However, we encourage parents and guardians to fill out the income form in order to give information that will help the district receive the necessary funding that help make our current offerings possible.

Together we can work to achieve excellence, support and inspire our students. Thank you for being part of our school community.

With deep appreciation,

Dr. Elida MacArthur
Superintendent

Our Shared Commitment to Be Safe

Keeping our schools open and our school community safe is a top priority at MPESD.

We are committed to following every measure designed to maintain a healthy environment that will allow our students, staff and families to thrive. It is critical that we all collaborate and follow instructions, including wearing masks and washing hands. Cleaning and disinfecting procedures are strictly implemented, and improved ventilation is also a factor that has been established for our school facilities. At the same time, conducting a daily symptom check is key.

Parents are encouraged to register their students in the optional COVID-19 testing program for children, taking place at school sites. We are counting on everyone to do their part for a successful and safe school year. We appreciate your collaboration.
Daily Health Screenings are Crucial
We ask parents and guardians to please help us stop the transmission of COVID-19 by conducting health screenings every morning at home, before sending your student to school to detect signs of the coronavirus. These symptoms can include:

  • Cough
  • Fever or chills
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat
  • Sudden loss of smell and/or taste
  • Joint pain
  • Feeling tired
  • Diarrhea

If a student is sick, please do not send them to class, and please notify your school site as soon as possible. Also keep students home if there's someone in the household who has tested positive for COVID-19.

We appreciate you taking the time to check for COVID-19 symptoms every morning!
New COVID-19 Testing Opportunities
for Students
At MPESD, we are fortunate to be able to offer free and optional COVID-19 testing for students, in addition to staff members. This is a new strategy in an effort to protect everyone’s health. Parents are required to give consent if they wish to have their student tested for coronavirus.

The test is a "self-test" that is monitored by designated school staff including our school nurse and sent out for processing. Results are reported back to the parent typically within 48 hours. Personal information is kept confidential, and district staff are only made aware of who is registered and has consented to test. If a result comes back positive, the district administration is notified. Insurance information is requested when registering but is not required. If you do not have insurance, indicate "No Insurance."

Parents that want their children to be tested, need to register their children and give consent using the link provided by their school site. Please note that unfortunately if they had already registered with a different link than the one for their specific school, they will need to register again by site so we can locate and test students accordingly.

Free Meals for All Students: Please Complete Form to Secure School Funding
We want to reiterate that all students are now eligible for free meals at school, regardless of their household income. This is a historic decision by the state of California to provide support to children so they can reach their full potential.

We still ask parents to please fill a household income form to help the district receive critical funding that our community relies upon.
Thank you for your collaboration! To access the form, please click here

Thank You for Supporting MPESD
Students with Supplies!
At the start of every school year, families face extra expenses in the quest to provide supplies for their children. It can be a very challenging time for some households. We want to express our gratitude to those who helped MPESD families with donations!

The district thanks Commissioner Rolando Bonilla (Ida Jew Academy), 7-Eleven (Edward and Theresa Ng), Peter Ortiz (Robert Sanders Elementary), Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Association, Bill Farley from the Moose Lodge, and everyone who contributed to these efforts supporting our students with resources to advance their education!

Preschool Enrollment Is Still Open!
We are reaching out to families interested in our MPESD Preschool Programs that prepare children for TK and Kindergarten. There is still opportunity to enroll your children in these successful programs, providing our youngest students with resources, motivation and fun.

At MPESD, we use the California State adopted Preschool Learning Foundations and Kindergarten California State Standards to design our lessons and set goals. Our preschool teachers are highly qualified, experienced, and engage in ongoing professional development. We have experienced bilingual support staff who work with parents to assess student needs and communicate individual progress throughout the school year.

Our program is culturally responsive and inclusive for all ability levels. It is open to all preschool-age children meeting requirements, regardless of home address.

This school year, the preschool program will be located at Valle Vista Elementary in our new “Early Learners at Valle Vista” classroom. We will have two programs: a morning program for children that turned four years old on or before August 1, and an afternoon program for ages 3 and 4 (must have turned 3 by September 1, 2021; birthdate is on or before September 1, 2018).

Parents must complete the online registration and preschool packet and return it to Linda Marqueda at lmarqueda@mpesd.org, (408) 223-3785 or visit our district office at 3434 Marten Avenue.
