Trainings & Learning Opportunities

Holistic Leadership: Leading through Uncertainty

Managers and Team Leaders are asked to step up more today than ever. With growing degrees of uncertainty and changing workplace expectations, managers and leaders need to rise up to the opportunity to drive both performance and employee engagement in their teams. This 2-hour presentation will give an overview of why unexpected changes are difficult for organizations to manage, and an overview of three holistic approaches to leadership. Further, this presentation will put the pencil to the paper by practicing a holistic approach found in the enterprise strategic planning process.

Bridging the Gap: Delivering Equitable Health Services with People with Disabilities

This two-part series aims to provide information and resources for how to improve equitable health care and health promotion services with people with disabilities. With local disability advocates as co-presenters, the discussion will explore 1) barriers to health care and chronic disease prevention among people with disabilities, 2) how to capture disability status and use that information to identify needed supports in patient-centered planning, 3) how to plan for accessibility assessments and implement program and policy solutions that lead to improved accessibility of your health care facility, and 4) where to find resources of local disability organizations and accessibility tools.

Seeking Subject Matter Experts

We are looking for new voices to share their knowledge and expertise! If you are interested in providing a training, please reach out to us. We are currently looking for trainers in the areas of addressing misinformation, grant management, and youth health and wellbeing in Montana.

Technical Assistance Center

We are excited to introduce the Montana Public Health Training Center’s new Technical Assistance Center (UM-TAC), which provides training and technical support for Montana’s network of Prevention Specialists (PSs) and their supervisors. Funded by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services through the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division, regional PSs and supervisors implement evidence-based programs and promising practices to prevent substance misuse and substance use disorders among youth, children, and adults. Their work follows the national strategic prevention framework developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The UM-TAC team is made up of four marvelous members whose diverse and complimentary backgrounds uniquely position them to strengthen and support Montana’s prevention workforce.

Meet the UM-TAC team!

Todd Harwell: Research Analyst, MPH

Greg Holzman: Research Analyst, MD, MPH

Kristen Cram: Technical Assistance Manager, MPH, MPA

Wellness

Wellness Program Update — From the Road

The Wellness Room at Summer Institute was humming—drop-in resets, creative reflection, and two restorative sound meditations. Our workshops on burnout, behavior change, and building a culture of well-being drew strong participation, and folks left with practical tools for themselves and their teams. Check out some photos below!

New Program Launch — We’re Well on the Way

This October, we’re launching Well on the Way, MPHTC’s refreshed workplace wellness roadmap. It’s simple, evidence-based, and distinctly Montanan. Here, long drives aren’t optional—they’re how we live, connect, and access what we need. We’ve leaned into that reality: a road-trip metaphor that makes well-being tangible—steady progress, scenic stops, timely refuels—so every worksite can move at a pace that fits their journey.

What you’ll get

  • Wellness Waypoints (biweekly): one structured learning session + one drop-in office hour/wellness break
  • Refuel Retreats: custom mini-retreats at your workplace, facilitated by our team
  • The Glovebox Guide: starter resources—SMART Goals, Wellness Wheel, and planning templates
  • Roadside Assistance: optional 1:1 coaching, plus a Roadside Safety Kit for tough moments
  • Across the Map community + Roadside Reflections monthly wellness newsletter

Public Health in the Schools Initiative

Health Fairs

Over 600 students attended health fairs in September in Lewistown and Glendive. We engaged with middle and high school students from Grass Range, Judith Gap, Denton, Winifred, Stanford, Harlow, Lewistown, Baker, Ekalaka, Wibaux, Savage, Circle, and Richey.

Videotaping the expanding lungs in our demonstration set at the Lewistown fair, a student exclaimed, "I'm sending this video to my mom - there's no way she is gonna keep smoking once she sees this!" And from a student in Glendive, "Man, I wish teachers did more of this hands-on stuff in class. I’ll remember your organization forever!”

As Montana youth settle in to a new school year, we would love your help spreading the word with your local schools about our initiative.

Want to get involved? We would love to talk with you! Email us at mphtc@mso.umt.edu.
