By Richard Carroll, CMP, Immediate Past President
MPINE Family,
It’s official, this will be the last communication you see from me as a board member. The Red Sox has officially started which is a sure sign of Spring (gosh, I hope) and so many exciting things are happening within the chapter!
Our chapter celebrated Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) with our partners at PCMA on April 12, 2018 at the BCEC Boston. Meeting professionals across the world participate in the international day of advocacy, with more than 120 events held across 6 continents in 2017.
Speaking of the Sox..did you know we will be at Fenway on May 16, 2018 cheering on our team in support of the MPI Foundation? What a great way to network, entertain clients and support our wonderful foundation. June will be another exciting month with WEC kicking off in Indianapolis followed by our Annual Meeting later in the month to celebrate our members and welcome our new Board of Directors.
Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve this chapter. It will have a special place in my heart for the rest of my years.
I’ll leave you with the lyrics from the great Frank Sinatra. “
For what is a man. What has he got. If not himself. Then he has naught. To say the things he truly feels. And not the words of one who kneels. The record shows I took the blows. And did it my way.”

By Robbie Samuels, Professional Speaker, Podcast Host, Coach
It feels incredibly rare in this Facebook world to make time for the kinds of connections that are only possible at conferences.
Think for a moment about the last conference you attended. You managed your way through all of the logistics to get there. You bought a ticket to the event, figured out whether you were flying or driving, booked a hotel room, and likely even put an away message on your work email and work voicemail. Right? But did you prepare, so you’ll get the most out of the experience?

CMP Continuing Education Hours: How to Get Them When Time, Money (or both) are Short
|
|
By Joanne Dennison, MSEd, CMP
One of the great things that has helped many people apply or recertify for their CMP, has been the rise of industry webinars. For all those people who cannot make it to meetings---or enough meetings, it offers a great alternative to earn the 25 clock hours of Continuing Education needed to apply or recertify.
Some other great things about them:

Kevin Cummiskey
Producer/Creative Director
Lehrhoff Productions
Past MPI/NE President and Member since 1991
This month we are putting one of our most seasoned members in the spotlight to share his story of MPI and give us all some advice on how to continue to be successful with MPI.
Early in my career, I was invited to be on the MPINE Board. So I said yes, and then… the beads of sweat started forming, as I realized I was about to have a place at the table, surrounded by icons of the meetings industry, people who’d been doing this for decades. At first, I didn’t say much, because I didn’t want to sound stupid or naïve. A friend on the board finally pulled me aside, “you know a lot more than you think you do, so get involved, Speak Up!” So I did. Haven’t stopped since. Ask anyone.
My point is I was so afraid of looking bad that I failed to realize how much I had to offer. Luckily, I was surrounded by some of the most thoughtful, supportive and committed people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know and to learn from. And there must be something about the New England water, because today’s volunteers and BOD members, and all who have come in between, continue to provide a nurturing environment where you can learn, teach and grow all at the same time. So, get involved, and when you do… Speak Up!

Kate Page, CMP
Assistant Director of Services
Fenway Park Events
Kate's volunteer commitment to MPI not only includes 2 years of service on the current Board, but she is actively coordinating our May MPI Foundation Chairman's Challenge Event, to take place where else but Fenway Park.
How did you first become involved with MPI?
I didn’t know it at the time, but I first became involved with MPI because of the people. I was looking to get more involved in the industry outside of the walls of Fenway Park. I had been to a few industry events, but decided to become a member of MPI because Taylor Grinnell was already a member. At one of my first events, I got to talking to Kristy Burns and she suggested I join a conference call to learn more about volunteering. I joined the conference call and unknowingly also joined the Education Committee and was soon a co-chair for an Education event. Not long after Kristy encouraged me to join the Board and I’ve been loving it ever since. These two people got me more involved and in the process I’ve met so many more people in volunteering that it keeps me coming back… and apparently both of them too as we’re all board members.
Q - Can you share one of your most memorable MPI stories?
One of my most memorable stories with MPI only happened because of the mission of the MPI Foundation. I was excited to explore options for the MPI Experiential Series and the Venice Film Festival was an amazing opportunity, especially with the film work I have done at Fenway Park. Traveling to Venice, Italy was a bit more expensive than I had planned, but the MPI Foundation awarded me a scholarship and I was able to attend! This was the first European MPI Experiential Event and it was truly a global experience from the film festival itself—along with the festival production program MPI put together—to our MPI Italia hosts, and attendees from several other countries. I can’t thank the MPI Foundation enough for enabling me to have this opportunity and I’m so excited to give back to the MPI Foundation this month with the Chairman’s Challenge!

As a volunteer on the MarCom Committee you will become more engaged by promoting our community. You can learn a new skill while using your natural creative talents and increase your business & personal connections. You will enjoy working independently while still being part of a team.

T
hrough a unique collaboration between the New England chapters of MPI and PCMA, over 270 participants gathered at the Boston Convention & Exposition Center to learn and connect for GMID.
Alan Kleinfeld, CMP, LEO of Arrive Conference Solutions delivered a keynote presentation on Event Safety & Security. Being a "Meeting Planner with a Badge" (police badge that is), Kleinfeld emphasized Safety & Security as a mindset and the differences between feeling free from harm and those measures which are taken to prevent harm. New tools to help be more prepared and understand risks can now be implemented for our events, Planners and Suppliers alike.
Our venue host, the BCEC and Levy Catering, put out an amazing display of regional foods and the networking reception enhanced by sponsored table-tops became the focus of the evening. "Fun Facts" on each of our 25 sponsors kept our Planner members engaged and valuable conversations were going on all around.
MPI/NE would like to extend sincere appreciation to all of our valued event sponsors:
- Massachusetts Convention Center Authority
- Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority
- Tristar
- David Fox Photography
- Party Rental Ltd
- VDA Productions
