As I sit writing this letter it is 62 degrees in Boston and we have just finished watching our 2nd Championship Parade in the span of 4 months. Seems like a great time to be in New England!
To continue this sports related streak I’m so looking forward to attending our February Educational event at the Warrior Ice Arena. I, like many of you, have driven by many times and I cannot wait to see what this space has to offer as an event venue.
We as the New England MPI community are so lucky to have such amazing venues and partners to work with on our monthly programs. It takes a lot to put these events on from a member volunteer standpoint but I don’t want to forget how important our sponsorship partners are to us as well. In February, make sure to find those members who are our monthly and annual sponsors and say hello and thank you!

February Educational Program
|
|
Think you could learn a thing or two about event planning from the man who was Senior Vice President, Events for the National Football League and was the head of the National Hockey League's Events & Entertainment Department?
We learn more from the things that go wrong than when things go right. "What to Do When Things Go Wrong" is your opportunity to learn from someone else about things that went wrong for Frank.
Frank will take us inside the Super Bowl and the Stanley Cup with his entertaining and informative multimedia presentation to show you how to solve any event related crisis with skill and confidence.
Itinerary:
5:30pm-6:00pm - Registration
6:00pm - 7:30pm - Educational Program
7:30pm-8:30pm - Networking Reception

Grown Up Guide to Work:
Money You May Think You Don’t Need
A friend of mine was considering going for a certification in the industry she was in. At the time she was at a company that was very supportive and would pay for all of it. She put it off and put it off again. Then she got another job that was a big step towards where she wanted her career to go. They too would support her, including financially, to obtain the certification. Now she put it off because she had a new job and she figured she would do it later.
Then the economy began to slide. Professional development money was cut. Then her job was eliminated. Now she had to do a job search where the certification would have helped her stand out. She did eventually find another position, but it did not include money for professional development. Eventually she paid out of her own pocket, to do the certification. She told me more than once how she regretted not doing it when the money was there.

You probably already know that one of the best reasons to volunteer for your association is to build stronger connections with others in your field. This is true if you are new to the meetings industry, a recent transplant from another region of the country, or planning to switch gears from working in a completely different industry.
Showing up at association meetings is the first step, you can’t get far in your career if you never leave your office to meet leaders in your field. Strategic volunteering is a great way to make a name for yourself in your industry and a way to give back once you’ve gotten that name recognition.

Steve Markman
Founder and President
Markman Speaker Management
Steve joined MPINE in December and he is already a valuable contributor. Keep your eyes open for his articles to be featured in our future publications!
I joined MPI because as the owner of a speakers bureau, MPI allows me networking opportunities with other industry professionals, both in person and through the various online forums.
For anyone thinking of joining I would encourage becoming a part of MPI by pointing out the breadth of the membership – meeting professionals from all industries and sectors who come together for camaraderie, networking and education.

Don't Let the Ball Drop:
A Countdown to Event Success,
Powered by PechaKucha
|
“Don’t Let the Ball Drop” was pioneered by Event Co-chairs Kim Randall and Nichole Baldwin in 2017 and this year, the two of them collaborated again to deliver another outstanding educational program.
Powered By PechaKucha. This rapid fire “20 images x 20 seconds each” format was taken on by each of our subject matter experts with excitement and ease delivering the most high quality content in the shortest of time-frames. We were fortunate to have all of these knowledgeable industry professionals step up to the podium:
- Sarah Sheehy, Contracts
- Laura Spencer, Unique Venues
- Becky McDougal, Creating Inclusive Events
- Fergal Gildea, Beverages
- Adam Elias, Security
- Dahlia El Gazzar, Maser Event Team Sanity
- Karen Staples, RFPs
- Cara Pratt & Alex Bombard-Fitch, Partnerships
The Foundation Room at The House of Blues provided a unique yet very conducive setting to this intimate event. All enjoyed the food, beverages and hospitality.
We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to our event sponsors and annual sponsors without whom none of this would be possible.
- House of Blues
- PSAV
- Party Rental Ltd
- As well as our annual sponsors:
