54.
Any guesses on what the number signifies for our Chapter? Years in existence? Nope. Number of members of the Board? Guess again. Times Bryan Lavin has said the word “community” during opening remarks? Close, but no…that number is way higher!
54 is the average number of chapter members that volunteer on a monthly basis for MPI New England. 54 people are essentially responsible with providing you, our members, with exceptional education content, networking, & marketplace opportunities. As you read that, you may be thinking, “Oh, that’s pretty great!” …well, not to be a Debbie Downer (sorry Debbies everywhere!), but that is only 12% of our total membership. Per MPI Global’s standards of chapter operations, the benchmark of success is 20% or about 91 people in terms of our Chapter.
I can mention at every event between here and the end of the MPI Year in June that we need more volunteers and that we would love to have you onboard. But, the fact is, that’s not compelling enough. We know from the basics of volunteer management that simply giving potential volunteers a “to do” list isn’t enough either. We need to connect you with a personal value proposition and here it is…the best way to see a true return on your membership investment is to raise your hand and volunteer.
If you are looking to hone a skill set, build your brand, learn a new aspect of the industry or enhance your leadership skills, consider MPI New England your training ground.
This month we will be hosting our Membership Meet-Up event at the Cheeky Monkey for the purpose of showing you all how volunteering can unlock the true potential of our community. I’d love to see you there and talk further about your professional goals and how MPI New England can help you achieve them. Give. Get. Grow. Help our chapter help you fuel your professional growth.
If you can’t make it this month, please send me a note and let’s talk about getting you more involved.

They're Playing Our Song
For many people, comprehension of music licensing starts when sitting in a class, frequently a CMP study group. As they listen, some of the students begin to realize they have been inadvertently breaking the law. Inevitably someone looks up in surprise during this discussion and says: ”But I paid $20 for my James Taylor CD—why can’t I play it for my walk-in music at my meeting?”
The term “intellectual property” has become very familiar to us in the past 15 years especially in the field of technology. But the thoughts behind it cover other fields too.

Abigail Stephens
Director of Event Sales
Boston Harbor Cruises
MPI New England has a terrific reputation for creating an environment for successful networking opportunities. I joined in 2018 to meet Boston event professionals, and grow the charter division at Boston Harbor Cruises. So far so good!
I’ve recently become obsessed with podcasts and love finding gems from friends. Topping the list this week is Joe Rogan’s interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Last Seen about the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Work Life series by Adam Grant. They are all fascinating!
Pictured is Whaler the Dog. He’s a good friend of mine although, I can’t claim him as my own

"What To Do When Things Go Wrong" by Frank Supovitz, President Fast Traffic Events & Entertainment
|
With background cheers from hockey spectators echoing upward toward our event, the reality of Frank Supovitz’s presentation on the 10 Mega-Truths of Crisis Management came to life. We learned “What To Do When Things Go Wrong” from one of the event industry’s greatest.
Frank shared his real-life experiences producing some of the most prestigious international sporting events and demonstrated how each of his 10 Mega-Truths have been tested over the years. Including that moment when everyone in the audience was transported back to February 2013 when the power went out during the Superbowl game. We all remembered it and got chills as we learned about what actually happened and the skills he put into practice to overcome this crisis.
If you are interested in learning more about "What to Do When Things Go Wrong", look for Frank's
New Book.
The Warrior Ice Arena was the absolute perfect venue, not only for this presentation, but for all of us to get together and experience this exciting, up and coming area of Boston.
Kudos to the event Co-Chairs, Julie Bowerman and Michele Yebba, for their time and hard work which made this event so successful.
