Getting Past the Fear of Asking
|
|
By Robbie Samuels, Professional Speaker, Podcast Host, Coach
How do you feel about soliciting and asking for money? Does your answer include words like “hate it”, “nervous”, “like I’m begging” and “it depends on the cause”?
In contrast, how do you feel when you write a check to your favorite organization? “Great", "engaged", "making a difference", "good" and "wish I could do more."
Asking for money makes people feel anxious, but donating makes them feel awesome. Here are six fundraising truths you could share with
your fundraising committee after asking those two questions.

Molly Quinn
National Sales Manager
Stoweflake Resort and Conference Center
I
joined the conference planning, hospitality world, about a year ago and I am never looking back! Back in October of 2017, I was set to be down in Boston for some business meetings, and was encouraged by my colleague to attend the MPINE meeting. She told me how great of an experience it would be to be surrounded by people in my industry and would feel welcomed…and may even learn a thing or two!
I attended my first MPINE meeting at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute and had just that experience and more. This industry, and the people in it, are so important to me and I love surrounding myself with people who are committed to moving forward and making meeting experiences successful.
I have had the pleasure to attend a few events since then, and have thoroughly enjoyed networking and meeting new people. We, here at Stoweflake had the pleasure of hosting the MPINE retreat last month and we truly loved welcoming the board here. I look forward to more experiences, meeting new people and growing these relationships. I truly love what I do and am happy to be a part of a community where I can continue to learn and grow. Thank you for welcoming me!

Laura Wong
Event Marketing Specialist
Tufts Health Plan / Tufts Health Freedom Plan
Laura is a dedicated member and volunteer in our Special Events Committee. While she is actively planning our June awards reception, I got her to reflect on her MPI experience so far.
What motivated you to Volunteer?
I have been a part of MPI for about 2 years, but I really wanted to get to know some of the other members better. Every time I attend an MPI event it is like one big happy family reunion. Everyone knows one another and are so friendly and welcoming. I really just wanted to get to be a part of that, get to know people a little better, and become more involved in the chapter.
Can you share one of your most memorable MPI/NE stories?
Last June I attended the Chairman's Challenge and AC and her team at FUN did a great fundraising activity of Backwards Karaoke! Also being a volunteer for a non-profit (the Musuclar Dystrophy Association) I am always looking for new fun and innovative ways to fundraise. Backwards Karaoke was something that I had never seen before! It was great that people could pay to have other individuals sing or stop! At that same event, I also reconnected with an old colleague I met at a pharmacy meeting 2 or 3 years prior, who at that time lived in Chicago but at Chairman's Challenge, I found out that she had just moved to Boston. It was so great reconnecting through MPI, and we arranged a time to meet up after work!
The photo is of Laura and her brother and in Hawaii for a family vacation, their favorite vacation spot - they've been 4 times! This time, they were on the island of Kaui and took this photo after the hiked down to the Queen's Bath.

Membership Event - Instant Replay
|
|
|
Our Membership event was an evening of fun, wine, casino games and all things MPI New England.
The evening's theme was to create interest in volunteerism on our committees. This was a unique (and free) opportunity to learn and ask questions about what happens behind the scenes in our Chapter and how our current volunteers have benefited from donating their time.
If you haven’t been to the City Winery Boston, you must! Stepping into the venue, you’re welcomed into an impressive and inviting bar area that has so much more than custom made wines to offer. Chic private dining rooms, a vibrant main restaurant and a private venue made for live performances. Literally something for everyone. Headline acts?! You have to check out their calendar…
Casino chips were flying in all directions as the sound of cheering and laughing from participants gathered around gaming tables really added to the vibe of a winning atmosphere.
MPI/NE would like to extend sincere appreciation to all of our valued event sponsors:
- City Winery Boston
- Casino Productions
- Next Level Promotions
- David Fox Photography

Red Sox Game - MPI Foundation Fundraiser
|
|
Take me out to the ballgame
Take me out with the crowd
…Let me root, root, root for the home team.
And that's exactly what about 100 MPI'ers did on Wednesday night as we gathered for the May Chairman's Challenge 2018 at Fenway Park.
Although it was a bit chilly we enjoyed a great evening of friendship, meeting old and new friends and enjoying a Red Sox 6 to 4 victory over the Oakland A's . The game featured home runs (always an "oooh! moment) by J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts and brilliant pitching by Chris Sale.
MPI/NE's own Julee Greenlaw with SER Exposition Services was recognized on the jumbo-tron for being the Leader of the Pack, which we achieved by having over 100 people attend the game and we raised over $1,100 for the MPI Foundation.
Kudos to Kate Page for making Wednesday's event happen. Buy MPI!
