President's Corner
By Kristy Burns, CMP
President-Elect

I cannot believe that I’m writing my final President's Corner of my President-Elect year! This past year the chapter has made great strides towards Bryan’s goal of  Community   and I’m excited to keep that trend going next year.

We have two exciting opportunities in the month of June to engage with MPI on a Chapter level and also on a Global level. June 15 th -18 th  in Toronto, MPI will be hosting the World Education Congress (WEC), if you have attended before you know that this is a fun few days. If you haven’t, you should! We have over 30 members from the New England Chapter who will be in attendance at WEC and I know that number will grow over the next month. I cannot wait to go and spend these days with our members to connect, gain valuable knowledge from the educational sessions and be inspired by all the special event touches that happen throughout the conference.

Later in June, on the 26 th,  we will be gathering together at the Harvard Club of Boston (a personal favorite of mine) to present our annual awards, say farewell to our departing board members and induct the 2019/2020 board.  We have amazing members within our New England Community and it’s important to recognize the good work that our members do within our chapter and the meetings Industry as a whole.  Don’t miss this wonderful evening with me at my home away from home!

Annual Awards Dinner & Board Induction
For more than 100 years, many famous and influential people have walked the elegant halls of the  Harvard Club of Boston and the evening of June 26th will be no exception. The Club will graciously open its doors for our MPI New England Annual Awards Dinner and Board Induction Ceremony.

It’s not just the history of the Harvard Club halls that is so hallowed, but the history of our Chapter too.

MPI New England turns 40 this year

Come join us to celebrate our Ruby anniversary, the accomplishments of our Annual Award winners and meet the 2019-2020 Board of Directors as they take the Oath of Service.
Y2Y Harvard Square  is our Community Service partner for this special event. Y2Y Harvard Square is a student-run overnight shelter that employs a youth-to-youth model to provide a safe and affirming environment for young adults experiencing homelessness.

Donations of home care cleaning products such as paper towels, sponges, rubber gloves, etc. will be collected during the event. Y2Y Harvard Square will also gladly accept gift cards to stores where they can purchase these items directly. Please consider donating to this worthy cause.

5:30 – 6:30 – Registration, cocktail networking reception
6:30 – 9:00 - Sit down dinner and award ceremony

Fast Traffic Events

From the man who has been behind-the-scenes at major events like the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, and Indy 500, Frank Supovitz guides you through the process of making sure you handle inevitable problems as if it’s something you do day in and day out.

When 100 million people watched the lights go out at Super Bowl XLVII, you would have expected our response at the Superdome to have been immediate. It wasn’t. It had started months before, when we were planning how to deal with the worst possible outcomes.

Developing contingency plans to protect our businesses, brands, and projects against the most dreadful possibilities requires a vividly dark imagination. Visualizing success is not enough. We have to also step back and visualize disasters a long time before they happen. Only then can you create a truly representative portfolio of contingency plans, and that’s as true for managing a business as it is for staging a sports event.

Joining MPI was an easy decision for me because over the past two years I have done what is needed to fully embrace a career change. During my very first MPI meeting the people were warm and inviting. I went to the meeting alone and never had a moment of feeling uncomfortable.

I asked how I could become more involved and was told “join a committee”! Now I’m happy to serve on the Special Events committee with very knowledgeable and dedicated people.  Joining a committee is wonderful way to meet people, get involved and gain different experiences.

To me, MPI is a valuable resource to learn about the industry, network with others and will provide me with the skills and knowledge needed to advance my career within the industry.

When you see me at the next MPINE event, say “Hi” and let’s enjoy a laugh together. I’m told I’m kind of funny!

MPI New England @
Boston Red Sox

On May 14 th , close to 100 of our members and guests donned their Red Sox gear along with rain coats and warm sweaters at our 2 nd Annual MPINE @ Red Sox outing.

The final score of the game did not reflect on the amount of fun and networking everyone enjoyed.

As an added bonus, the chapter raised close to $1000 to fund our new chapter CMP Scholarship!
