President's Corner
By Bryan J. Lavin, Immediate Past President

September might be the worst of all the months. That’s, right – hot take coming from your IPP! But if you think about it, sure, September has historically awesome weather here in New England and yes, maybe some parents celebrate their kids going back to school. To me though, it represents getting back to work and the end of Summer. The good news is, we can flip the narrative! What a great time for yourself to go back to school, of sorts, with MPI New England!

September is a perfect month to learn a new skill, develop as a leader, or contribute back to the meetings and events community in a meaningful way. The best way to do this (if you have ever read any of my previous President’s Corners I am sure you can guess where this is going) is…wait for it…Volunteering! So, to help cut through the clutter and apply some focus to volunteer opportunities within the Chapter, I thought I’d highlight maybe a less obvious path to contribution.

Have you ever wanted to bump up your social media abilities to better connect with your attendees and customers? What about content generation for the programs that you manage? Ever wondered what is takes to build out the back end of a website? Marketing skills are definitely some of the more underrated skills in our industry and guess what, MPI New England is the perfect place to learn them by actually doing them! This very publication that you are reading was completely produced by volunteers from lay-out, to content, to delivery. If you have any interest in helping out the Marketing Team or any other committee, I’d love to hear from you!! Hit me up at [email protected] ...and yes, I am back in school now too.…

Missed the August Meeting?
The August 2019 Education event was one to remember! Former MPI President, Chris Gasbaro, kept us all on our toes with his high energy, high impact Shift presentation! Using video, activities and the event space itself, Chris’ presentation demonstrated creative ways make our programs and meeting events more energizing, interactive and memorable for all.

AVFX was set up for its annual technology showcase. After Chris’ presentation, we were all invited to watch demonstrations of fantastic new AVFX lighting and video technologies, including an LED entryway tunnel, all LED panel stage sets and some dazzling projection mapping! If you haven’t been to one of AVFX’s technology showcases yet, we highly recommend you attend the next one and keep up to date with new and exciting event technology, equipment and trends.

A huge thank you to all of our event partners and annual sponsors for their ongoing support of our Chapter:

5 Ways to Attract More Corporate Events
by Caroline Cox, Content Marketing Manager for Gather
As part of our State of the Plate report, we conducted an industry survey with hundreds of restaurant event pros. One of the interesting results we found showed that, for more than one-third (35.5%) of respondents, corporate events are the most lucrative event types at their restaurant.

Not only do corporate events often require less planning and lower overhead costs, but they can also help fill your weekday calendars and are more likely to be recurring events vs. one-offs, such as weddings.
Not sure of the most effective ways to attract more corporate clients through your doors? These tips will help you bring them in — and keep them coming back.
