Happy October Friends!

We have a jammed packed newsletter this month so I’m going to keep this short and sweet, like

Halloween candy!

Let’s get straight to the point. We are in holiday season folks. Yes, That’s Right, I said it. The minute the pumpkin spice hits everything pops up, I personally tend to blackout and the next thing I know I’m hearing pop... fiz... clink, seeing fireworks, and signing my documents in the wrong year. I’m so intentionally full that sometimes I tend to go on robot mode full speed ahead to get through. I read all the Instagram self-help posts saying “exercise more” or “sleep more” but let’s be real, in our industry that’s not happening. So maybe instead of setting ideas and goals that we know are probably not going to happen right now, go easy on yourself. Work on our favorite SMART goals personally and professionally. Allow yourself to say no and with the same hand know when to take action and make it happen. Give yourself grace with gumption. And when in doubt, call your best friend (or me) and chat it out.

Gourd Luck out there folks!

EDUCATION LUNCHEON

What can meeting and event professionals learn from the largest event that took place in Tennessee?

Our speaker, David Ewing, is a 9th generation Nashville native who has over 25,000 followers on his Instagram page @TheNashvilleIwishIknew. He also has the largest private collection of Nashville memorabilia and many items from his 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition Collection are on display at the Parthenon until the end of the year.

David’s presentation will feature the six-month event that took place in Nashville in 1897 when 1.8 million people visited the grounds of Centennial Park. While this event took place over 100 years ago, there are some powerful lessons to be uncovered as well as important Tennessee history for meeting & event planners to know.

Key learning objectives from this event include:

  1. The power of partnerships: how to organize an event including the whole State of Tennessee.
  2. Getting positive press, word of mouth to create excitement for your event.
  3. When to delay an event to make it better, sacrificing an important anniversary date.
  4. Create awards that celebrate the best of Tennessee.
  5. How to keep the organizers of your event together even when the big event is over.
  6. The importance of great speakers and music.

We are excited to announce our August Rock Star:

Rip Beasley!

“As a new board member, I had no idea where to start or how to ensure that I serve the MPI members in the best possible way. I had only been a member for a year and knew a handful of people. So, I called as many members as possible to introduce myself, listen to why they joined MPI, discover what their needs were, and how I can truly fulfill my role. Rip happened to be the very first call I made in my rounds. Not only did he share his passion for MPI, but he also was so overjoyed in his committee member role as the Door Prize Collector. I had no idea how much this role meant to him and how fulfilled it made him. My first call with Rip taught me so much! Without realizing it, he gave me the confirmation I felt within to begin my role by listening first to our members before I lead. After our call, I had dozens more calls and each one energized me and made me more confident in my position. MPI is so honored to have someone like Rip who values the big and seemingly small tasks during our events and our organization!” - Shardé Curry

‘ I am so Grateful to MPI-TN. Since joining in January of ‘16 I have represented Brown’s Florist as a Member of MPI. Working my Membership so that your Membership is more valuable. I strive to get to know each of you. I have met some tremendous people whom I admire and respect. I am pictured here with the 2017 ‘Pillar Award’ which went on Tour with me for a month. In 2019 I received the ‘Beth Calveard Volunteer Spirit Award’. In between a few other nominations. I do put my heart in Volunteering for MPI and will always be Grateful to all the Members.’ Love and God Bless- Rip Beazley

She's the "Nala" to my "Simba"

How Derrick and Valerie Became an Inseparable Pair

Derrick Pannell, Sales and Event Manager for Morton’s The Steakhouse, joined the MPI Mentorship Program in December 2020. He had just moved to Nashville and hardly knew anyone, much less event professionals. He was paired with Valerie Summers, Gary Musick Productions’ VP of Business Development or as most know her: Queen of Everything.

Derrick’s first trip to Broadway was with Valerie. She set up an entire day of sales visits and tours with venues and sales managers. It was his first real downtown Nashville experience as a sales manager, and he was privileged to have an expert guide. Not only did Valerie introduce Derrik to important people in the industry, but she also invited him to be part of her tribe. Derrick recalls, “Right out of the gate she set up a St. Patrick's Day party at Arrington and invited me; and introduced me to close personal friends, colleagues, and professional contacts.”

Nearly two years later, most MPI TN members know of and love Derrick. He is a true champion of MPI TN and the meetings and events industry, but not everyone realizes that he credits Valerie as his ultimate mentor. “She has such an easy, natural flow for sales, and I've absolutely grown from experiencing her in action. It's somehow warm, easy-going, and comfortable - while being a legitimate force of nature at the same time.”

Valerie professes, “Derrick is the real treasure found and I’m so glad he’s in my life!”

“We immediately knew that we were destined to be close friends, and I can't imagine the experience of moving here without her influence and guidance,” Derrick says. “She's the "Nala" to my "Simba".

While we can’t guarantee a Lion King coupling, the mentorship committee strives to make exceptional mentor/mentee pairings and has connected over 50 pairs since December 2020. The four-month sessions are offered twice a year. February – May and August – November. Each session is limited to 20 participants to keep the group small and personal and includes virtual and in-person group gatherings.
