Celebrate the Magic of Your Library:
National Library Week, April 19–25
National Library Week celebrates the vital role libraries play as welcoming spaces for learning, exploration, and connection for all ages.
Beyond books, libraries offer audiobooks, movies, free Wi-Fi, research databases, digital resources, and programs like storytimes, book clubs, and workshops that bring the community together and inspire lifelong learning.
Visit the library, attend a program, or discover something new and thank the patrons, volunteers, and supporters who keep it thriving. Don’t forget to thank a library worker on Tuesday, April 21 for National Library Workers Day, because behind every great library is a team of real-life information superheroes!

After selling U.S. Steel to J. P. Morgan, he devoted himself to philanthropy, funding over 2,500 public libraries around the world & supporting education, culture, & peace. The program will also examine the 1892 Homestead Steel Works strike, a violent clash between workers, management, and the Pinkerton National Detective Agency & explore how Carnegie’s vision of giving transformed access to knowledge for generations. National Poetry Month
Each April, libraries nationwide celebrate National Poetry Month, honoring poetry’s impact and the voices shaping our communities. At MPL, however, poetry is a vital part of cultural life year-round.
One of the most vibrant ways poetry comes alive here is through our poetry workshop led by Elizabeth O’Rourke, which meets on certain Fridays throughout the year - the next is coming up April 17 (register HERE). As O’Rourke shares, “Gathering with library patrons who love verse & the word allows for a beautiful, safe, and necessary feeling of community. We've been able to create a space where we can deepen our appreciation for the craft of poetry while also sharing how these pieces touch our individual lives and memories."
The library is also home to the personal poetry collection of Mary Louise Cox, former Poet Laureate of the Village of Mamaroneck, whose legacy continues to inspire. Across the street, the Poetry Garden dedicated to her memory offers a peaceful space for reflection and reading, honoring her contributions and poetry’s unifying power.
During National Poetry Month and beyond, the community is invited to engage with poetry by attending workshops, exploring the Cox collection, or visiting the Poetry Garden.

Staff Spotlight
While the library may appear to be simply shelves of books and friendly service, much of its work happens behind the scenes, thanks to dedicated tech and collection services staff.
Hilary Hertzoff (right) started with MPL in 1992 as a YA Librarian. Now in Collection Development & Tech Services, she catalogs, processes, and repairs children’s & YA books, recommends titles, fixes errors, runs reports, and occasionally leads programs. Hilary’s versatility ensures that every item on our shelves is ready for our patrons to enjoy.
Julie Maida (left) joined in 1986 as a Circulation Clerk and later managed processing of all adult materials. After retiring, she returned part-time to Tech Services, where she processes adult books, magazines, and donations - cataloging, labeling, repairing, preparing displays, and overseeing discards to maintain quality and accessibility.
Together, Hilary and Julie keep the library running smoothly, ensuring patrons can always find the right materials. Next time you check out a title, take a moment to appreciate the hands behind the shelves, keeping the library organized, up-to-date, and welcoming for everyone.
