Dear MPOG Colleagues,

Looking back on what we’ve accomplished this year and looking forward to the road ahead, it gives me great pride to be a part of such a talented and collaborative community. Our MPOG research and QI missions have continued to become increasingly integrated, with several clinical trials in full swing, that can in turn become an evidence basis for our evolving quality measures.

Thanks to everyone’s diverse contributions – from ensuring high-quality data, to transforming the data into generalizable knowledge, to implementing the knowledge in ways which can tangibly benefit patients.

As always, I am excited for what’s to come!

Research

THRIVE

The THRIVE trial continues to run smoothly, and recruitment is ahead of schedule with over 6,200 patients randomized. The study is on track to complete enrollment by our deadline of August 1, 2027. This spring, we started the process of onboarding four new recruitment sites, Johns Hopkins University, University of Texas Southwestern, University of North Carolina, and Temple University. We expect them all to be up and running by the end of the year.

VEGA-2

The VEGA-2 trial (the choice of vasopressor to prevent postoperative acute kidney injury after major non-cardiac surgery: a multicenter pragmatic cluster cross-over randomized trial) successfully kicked off at University of California San Francisco and the University of Michigan! We are welcoming two new sites to the trial starting August 1st, University of Virginia and University of Maryland. We are ecstatic that the trial is underway, and we greatly appreciate the support of MPOG and our participating sites.

Outcomes Research Fellowship

Congratulations to Dr. Dieter Adelmann and Dr. Brian Reon on completing the 2024-2025 MPOG Fellowship! They will be presenting the findings from their capstone projects at this year’s MPOG Retreat in San Antonio.

Thank you, Dr. Adelmann and Dr. Reon, for all your hard work; we are eager to see the impact you’ll have in MPOG and the field of anesthesia!

Quality Improvement

New Measures

We are excited to announce the release of SUS-08 which assesses mean fresh gas flow < 1 L/min during the administration of inhaled anesthetic agents. This measure continues our journey to safely reduce fresh gas flows when using inhaled anesthetic agents for general anesthesia.

Retired Measures

As previously announced and per Quality Committee recommendation, CARD-02: Myocardial Injury and CARD-03: Myocardial Injury, High Risk Patients measures were retired 7/2/2025 due to variability in troponin testing standards across sites and inability to accurately benchmark.

Cardiac Subcommittee

The Cardiac Subcommittee met in March, and most recently on Monday, June 30, 2025. During the Spring meeting, we performed reviews of the first two measures developed by the Cardiac Subcommittee, TEMP-06-C and TEMP-07-C and voted that updates were not needed, and approved updates to the cardiac antibiotic redosing and selection measures (ABX-03-C and ABX-04-C) and cardiac surgery AKI measure (AKI-02-C).

At the June meeting, we made progress on two quality measures under development, BP-07-C (induction/pre-incision hypotension avoidance), and TRAN-05-C (coagulation monitoring for transfusions). Meeting minutes can be reviewed on the Archive Events page. Our next Cardiac Subcommittee meeting will be held in November 2025.

All Cardiac Subcommittee meetings are open to all anesthesiologists or those interested in improving cardiothoracic care, regardless of MPOG Membership. Please contact Dr. Allison Janda if interested in joining!

Obstetrics Subcommittee

Thanks to all those who attended the May 14, 2025 Obstetric Subcommittee meeting. The group reached consensus and voted not to include midazolam as a prophylactic antiemetic for cesarean deliveries (PONV-05). Participants also agreed to develop two new obstetric-specific measures in 2025: documentation of epidural replacement and incidence of unintended dural puncture. In preparation for this new measure, sites are asked to map all ‘wet tap’ variables to MPOG concept ID 50291 (Inadvertent Dural Puncture). Please reach out to support@mpog.zendesk.com with any questions.

We appreciate your continued engagement and thoughtful discussion at Obstetric Subcommittee meetings. If you or a colleague are interested in joining the Subcommittee, please contact Kate Buehler to be added to invites and the Basecamp Forum. Our next meeting is scheduled for September 10, 2025 at 1pm ET.

Pediatric Subcommittee

The MPOG Pediatrics Committee is led by Dr. Vikas O’Reilly-Shah (Seattle Children’s) and Dr. Morgan Brown (Boston Children’s); Dr. Brown will assume the chair role on January 1, 2026, as Dr. O’Reilly-Shah concludes his term in December. Nominations are now open for a two-year Vice-Chair term (2026-28). See the role description for more details.

At the June 23, 2025, meeting, committee members voted to retire TRAN-04 (overtransfusion) and modify NMB-03 (NMB dosing), SUS-05 (minimizing nitrous induction) and TRAN-03 (transfusion vigilance). Full details of the modifications in progress are in the Meeting Summary.

Looking ahead, the group plans to draft a new ‘suite’ of pediatric transfusion metrics and will review progress at the next meeting on Monday, December 1, 2025 at 4pm ET.

All pediatric meetings are open to anyone interested in improving pediatric anesthesia care, regardless of MPOG membership status. Please contact the MPOG Pediatric Program Manager, Meridith Wade, if interested in attending.
