Dear Members,
In August, the Municipal Review Committee (MRC) submitted a public comment on behalf of its 115 member communities, expressing strong support for the proposed Chapter 428, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rule by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). While EPR is a complex initiative, the MRC sees significant potential for its communities and the Hampden processing facility, operated by Municipal Waste Solutions (MWS), to play a vital role in the EPR program. We emphasized the importance of explicitly recognizing anaerobic digestion within the rules and advocated for leveraging larger facilities like MWS to maximize the program's benefits. Our facility will have the capacity and expertise to efficiently handle large volumes of recyclable materials, improving recycling rates across the state.
