Expanding Connection Book Club
Join the Expanding Connection Book Club for a Zoom discussion of, "Everywhere You Look" with the author, Tim Soerens on January 7, 2025.
Everywhere You Look examines why the emerging generation is opting out of the church in large numbers. Are they dismayed at what appears to be their options for participation? Is church really necessary anymore?
Tim Soerens sees this unsettled state of affairs as an extraordinary opportunity: the church, he says, is on the edge of a new possibility at the very moment so much of it feels like it's falling apart. In his extensive travels in all kinds of neighborhoods, Soerens has seen the beginnings of this movement firsthand.
You are invited to read the book and join the discussion with the author and others January 7th at 7pm. Click here for more information.

Ottawa Trinity UMC - 42nd Christmas School
77 preschool children of all faiths from the Ottawa-Glandorf area met December 2 – December 6 for the 43rd annual Ecumenical Christmas School at Ottawa Trinity United Methodist Church.
“We were so excited that we could share the Christmas story with these children,” co-coordinator Nancy McBride expressed. “The children’s energy and enthusiasm truly get us in the Christmas spirit.”
During the week, the children learned about the true meaning of Christmas through songs, creative play, stories, crafts, and games. They heard about Gabriel’s visit to Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, Jesus’ birth, the visits by the shepherds and wise men (including the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh), and angels singing to the newborn King.
Wednesday, Chas and Beth Myers shared some of their 102 nativity sets they had collected from around the world. The children were in awe
The final day, the children helped tell the Christmas story and sang songs they had learned, including traditional ones, such as “Away In a Manger,” and new favorites, such as “Harps, and Halos, Flap Your Wings.” Trinity’s sanctuary was overflowing with parents, family, and friends.
Prior to the afternoon program, four-year-old Isabella Musser played “O, Come Little Children” on her violin.
Ann Koch was the teacher for the afternoon Trees class. She had been a helper for several years, and this year, she stepped up to teach. As a bonus, both her granddaughters, Faye and Eliana, were in her class.
“I have a passion for children and loved learning their personalities,” Ann declared. “My favorite part of Christmas school is their ‘little’ perspective of the Christmas story. They are very sweet and it’s extra special when you have two granddaughters in your class.”
“I like to sing the ‘Ten Little Angels,” Eliana said, shyly.
Her cousin, Faye, added, “I liked singing songs and playing.”
Bailey Powley’s son, Hudson, attended Christmas School for three years. Bailey volunteered to be a helper in Hudson’s class each year.
“We looked forward to Christmas School every year. I looked forward to teaching the kids the true meaning of Christmas, and watching the kids enjoy the crafts, the singing, and the program on Friday,” Bailey related.
Hudson said he liked the crafts and getting to dress up in nativity costumes.
Throughout the week, 13 lead teachers and 24 classroom aides, in addition to three snack coordinators, lent their time and talents to make the event successful.
Ecumenical Christmas School was begun in 1982 by LaDonna Hoffman, Peg Hull, and Nancy Kaufman, and has been a community tradition since that time.
“It is our honor and privilege to provide this program to the next generation of children,” said McBride. “We are so proud that they leave knowing the true meaning of Christmas.”
Trinity’s minister, Pastor Marcella Ciccotelli, concluded, “What could be better than rooms full of preschoolers learning the true Christmas story? It was wonderful! We are so thankful for each person involved and the families who brought their children to learn about and know the Savior of the world.”

2025 Virtual Laity Discernment Retreats
Do you feel God's call on your life but are uncertain how to discern that call or what to do next? If so, then this is the Retreat for you! At the Laity Discernment Retreats, we will talk about call, discernment and what it means to be "called by our baptism." We will learn ways to intentionally enter into a time of prayer about discernment and we will discover Spiritual Rhythms that can help guide our journey. We will also discuss the variety of ways Laity can serve both in our churches and in our communities.
In 2025, the virtual laity discernment retreat will consist of two, two-hour ZOOM sessions, followed 6 weeks later by a two-hour ZOOM debriefing. In the 6 weeks between sessions, there will be opportunities to read, reflect, and practice Spiritual Rhythms that will lead you to a better understanding of your own call.
"I would recommend a Laity Discernment Retreat to someone who is searching or has questions about how they can serve their community or their church. It can help guide them through the process, provide resources and help provide a sense of peace about what they can be doing right now." -Twila Boyd, 2019 participant
