MRFF Condemns U.S. Congressman Who Scheduled “Service Academy Night” on Jewish Holy Day

MRFF CONDEMNS U.S. CONGRESSMAN WHO

SCHEDULED “SERVICE ACADEMY NIGHT”

ON JEWISH HOLY DAY ROSH HASHANAH

AND REFUSES TO CHANGE DATE

Jewish students in California's 51st Congressional District

will not be offered the same opportunity to explore a career

as a military officer as their Christian counterparts, thanks

to U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (D-CA). Why? Because Congressman Vargas, in an egregious affront to his constituents of the Jewish faith, has scheduled his district's "Service Academy Night" for September 26, the Jewish High Holy Day of Rosh Hashanah, excluding observant Jews from the opportunity of meeting with officers from the various service branches and

learning about the U.S. military service academies!

Despite a demand from MRFF, Congressman Vargas is refusing to change the date of the event, leaving interested Jewish students with only the anti-Semitic sloppy seconds of watching it later on video, with no opportunity to meet the officers or ask questions.

Would the congressman have scheduled such an event on

Easter or Christmas or Good Friday? Of course not!

But those are the "important" religion's holy days.

Mikey,

As a retired Air Force Lieutenant General, allow me to express my gratitude for your courage, determination, and willingness to defend the religious freedom of all who serve our nation. Like you, I am a graduate of the Air Force Academy, where church attendance was once mandatory for all cadets. That violation of a constitutional right was ended by a court decision fifty years ago, but overt and covert attempts to religiously indoctrinate members of all services continue to this day, often by or with the support of senior commissioned and noncommissioned officers. Junior officers, enlisted, and cadets are often afraid to report these incidents because of potential repercussions, which is why the role of the MRFF is so important. Not only do you advocate for them, but you also bring their plight to the attention of those who can address and cease the violation of their rights. As a senior leader I welcomed MRFF’s intervention, and as a retiree, remain grateful for your untiring efforts to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.

Religion in the military is supposed to be a personal choice and issue, not a cause. Proselytizing helps break down the cohesion so necessary for military units.Religion is a private matter, not an ax, with which to divide believers from unbelievers.Jews from Baptists, Catholics from Muslims. And to make them all snake handlers–or whichever group serves the best Easter ham. Who is to decide the standards?

it seems that religion on its own, cannot attract enough adherents, so military officers feel the need to proselytize, wanting to force every soldier to be of the same religious inclination.A sure way to break down cohesion and eventually destroy the reputation of our military and nation. At what point do they kick capable women out, and forbid unauthorized prayers? In the service you can keep your religion, but not force it on your shipmates. Let’s us all encourage the wiser course of not having a religious army. For indeed which religion would be the only one? Yours? or your (Choose one) Muslim/Jewish/Buddhist /nudist shipmates’.
