Dear Chartiers Valley families,

While the COVID-19 pandemic has taken center stage this school year, we can not forget the importance of school safety.  Sadly, the recent tragic events in Knoxville, Boulder, and Indianapolis remind us that prevention and preparedness are top priorities, now and always.

At Chartiers Valley, we take matters of school safety very seriously. School police officers serve in each of our school buildings, and the District partners with our local police departments and first responders.  We have developed emergency response plans and regularly practice safety drills with students and staff.  Furthermore, school police and counselors talk with students about positive decision-making and responsible citizenship.

We can further promote a safe environment in our schools by talking with your children at home regarding matters of safety. We encourage you to share our school policies, rules, and consequences with your children and discuss the importance of responsible behavior.  For instance, District policy prohibits the possession of any type of weapon at school. Violation of this policy results in serious and appropriate consequences, as outlined in the student handbooks.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, please urge your children to talk to a trusted adult if they see something concerning or feel unsafe.  Anonymous reporting is available via phone or text through the Safe2Say program.  We applaud students and parents who courageously come forward to report concerns, as this is key to preventing crises.

For your reference, below are some helpful resources for talking to your children about school safety.

Thank you for your support and for trusting us to educate and care for your children each day.  Again, their safety is our highest priority.  As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.
