Senate Education Committee
Hosts Public Hearing
The Senate Education Committee hosted a public hearing on Monday, November 9, to discuss the option of year-round school. Speakers, including Dr. Lee Childress, superintendent of the Corinth School District, Dr. Carey Wright from the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), and Dr. Stephen Pruitt from the Southern Regional Education Board spoke of recent experiences with and the pros and cons of year-round school. Senate Education Chairman, Dennis DeBar, stated at the hearing that the Senate has no current plans to mandate a year-round calendar. Instead, the Senate wanted more information for those districts which wish to pursue a year-round calendar schedule. Dr. Carey Wright, along with staff from MDE, also discussed purchasing and deliveries of devices under the Equity in Distance Learning Act which was passed under Senate Bill 3044 earlier this year. Dr. Wright explained that 390,000 total devices were ordered through the program and that MDE is currently working through all reimbursement requests.
Senate Universities & Colleges Committee Hosts Public Hearing
The Senate Universities and Colleges Committee held a public hearing Tuesday, November 10, regarding dual enrollment. Comments were heard from MDE, the National Conference of State Legislators, the Community College Board, and the Institutions of Higher Learning. The Senate is interested in the opportunities that dual enrollment offers students across Mississippi. Information was shared with the committee that involved financial concerns, student access to the programs, and types of fees. 
MDE Reschedules Monthly Board Meeting
The Mississippi Department of Education’s regular monthly board meeting, originally scheduled for Thursday, November 12, was rescheduled. The rescheduled date has not been determined, at this time.
