With the new year comes a time to reflect on the past and to welcome exciting new opportunities. A multi-million dollar building project will expand Thurston Hall, providing laboratory, teaching and meeting spaces for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, while giving the south end of the Engineering Quad a modern new look. They are making surgery safer, enabling clean biofuels, and helping to search for powerful new superconducting materials – all as undergraduate students.
Baker, Dufresne, Madsen elected fellows of scientific societies
Several faculty members earned fellowships at prestigious scientific societies this year, growing the list of MSE professors receiving high honors from some of the world's most respected science and engineering organizations. Shefford Baker, associate professor, was elected a fellow of the Materials Research Society. Eric Dufresne, visiting professor who will join MSE as a professor in July, was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society. And Lynnette Madsen, NSF program director and a visiting scholar and professor, has been elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
