VOL. 69 - December 11th, 2018
With  great power  there must also come ...  great  responsibility!  ”―  Stan Lee
Hello, Friend!
Congrats to our BIG WINNERS at the BIG SHOW!
Ruthvik Murali got 6 month of FREE music lessons, and Jerry Zhang walked away with a brand new iPad mini.

Prizes are all well and good, but we of course we all know who the "real" winners were in this whole extravaganza - each and every performer who got to experience the excitement of performing live music on stage, with a group of their peers, in front of a packed house! We had nearly 100 students making up 23 bands, playing everything from punk rock to modern pop to classical to jazz to improvised songs about bananas.

And speaking of improvised banana songs - Groove Lab is coming, January 2019. Right after Winter Break.
NO LESSONS DECEMBER 24TH - JANUARY 5TH!
WE ARE OPEN FOR LESSONS ON SUNDAY, DEC 23RD & SUNDAY, JAN 6TH!

With peace, love & music,

TIPS WELCOME
Using Rewards Effectively

When a child first begins lessons there’s often an initial period of excitement where everything is fun and new. Your child wants to practice because they’re eager to be able to play. But then there comes a time when the novelty wears off and the very long and slow road of music learning stretches out before them. How can you help your child want to keep going on days when practicing the piano doesn’t seem that rewarding right now?

Two Kinds of Rewards - intrinsic and extrinsic.
While waiting for the love of music to take over, sometimes parents need to supply extrinsic rewards for piano practice. I am fully in favor of this, if it is done right.

Short-Term Rewards
The main goal of the reward system is to establish good habits. Once a habit is established, a reward isn’t needed as much.

To create an effective reward system, choose a specific goal for your child, something you can measure. Maybe you’d like your child to have a better attitude about music practice. You can make a chart with five empty squares, and tell your child that every day they come to piano practice with a smile, you’ll draw a smiley face in one of the squares. Then, when every square has a smiley face, the two of you will go out for ice cream together.

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC

According to Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab International, which conducted the research on the relaxing effects of various songs, the top song produced a greater state of relaxation than any other music tested to date. In fact, listening to that one song — “Weightless” — resulted in a striking 65 percent reduction in participants’ overall anxiety, and a 35 percent reduction in their usual physiological resting rates.

The song was actually constructed to do so. The group that created “Weightless”, Marconi Union, did so in collaboration with sound therapists. Its carefully arranged harmonies, rhythms, and bass lines help slow a listener’s heart rate, reduce blood pressure and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

PROJECT SCL - INSPIRATIONAL VIDEO OF THE MONTH
Music is a powerful communication tool--it causes us to laugh, cry, think and question. Bassist and five-time Grammy winner, Victor Wooten, asks us to approach music the same way we learn verbal language--by embracing mistakes and playing as often as possible.
Even though most musicians will agree, it is rarely approached this way.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Kate Shofstall
INSTRUMENT: VOICE
TEACHER: LUNA
AGE: 14
STARTED LESSONS: April 2017
SCHOOL: Livermore High School
GRADE: 9th
HOBBIES: Drawing, painting, reading and cooking

After Kate's stand-out performance of "Growing Pains" at the recent Big Show, you might find it hard to believe that not too long ago she suffered from severe stage fright - so bad that she nearly missed her debut performance!

"She has really come out of her shell through singing lessons," says Kate's mom. "Her first concert she was almost too scared to go up on stage, but now she has such confidence in herself that there is no hesitation to participate."

And there's no wonder why Kate has now has confidence! Not only has she put in hard work practicing singing (and ukulele), plus built up the courage to confront her fears, she also totally and completely rocks. See video proof below...

OUR CONCERT PICK
GHOST LIGHT
Ages 16+
Thursday, December 27 &
SFriday, December 28th at
TERRAPIN CROSSROADS in San Rafael
Ghost Light is a true musical collaboration; five personalities, five perspectives, and five unique approaches towards one common sound.

Bucking conventional tradition, rather than initially focusing on live shows, the band played together for the first time in a recording studio in Philadelphia. This decision gave the band’s members - Holly Bowling, Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang - the ability to come to the project with fresh ears and no pre-conceived notions.

 BETTER LATE THAN EVER BEFORE!

I didn’t play in college, then I raised my family. And then here I am, this middle aged person. I would take my violin out of the closet every six months, since I liked to play it. So then eventually the kids are gone, and I thought, “Well what do I want to do? I want to take lessons! I really want to learn how to play this thing!”

if you love something, that’s the bottom line. If you have a love for something, then you just want to work at it. The unfortunate thing is that sometimes we accidentally put things aside when we shouldn’t have. Some people say, “well if you loved it, then you wouldn’t have put it aside.” But other things just take priority.
