MTEC Augmenting Military
Funding with Private Dollars
|
|
As part of MTEC’s mission, MTEC’s outreach team seeks to augment military funding with private dollars. In February 2018, MTEC released its first Request for Project Proposals (RPP) that included three Sponsors – USAMRMC, BrightFocus Foundation, and Glaucoma Research
F
oundation. Together, they are willing to provide up to $6M to support innovative science that will regenerate damaged visual pathways. All three Sponsors will be involved in the evaluation and selection process, and have made the opportunity known through their respective research networks. Thomas M. Brunner, President and CEO Glaucoma Research Foundation said, “It has been rewarding to collaborate with MTEC and BrightFocus to develop this RPP to accelerate technology to preserve and restore vision for both battlefield wounds and natural diseases like glaucoma.”
“We are excited to join this partnership to tap the power of innovation and discovery to save sight for members of the military and those on the homefront,”
said BrightFocus President and CEO Stacy Pagos Haller.
Injuries related to the eye are among the most prevalent injuries that Warfighters sustain, accounting for 12-15% of all battlefield wounds. The overarching goal of this partnership is to develop prototype technologies that restore, preserve, or regenerate the optic nerve damaged by traumatic eye injury. In addition, the prototype development proposed in response to this RPP may also be intended and commercialized for dual
‐
use in both military and civilian markets, such as the treatment of glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration. The ‘dual-use’ nature of the prototypes that will be funded by this RPP make them attractive topic areas to engage with private funders.
Dr. Lauren Palestrini, Director of Research at MTEC, who spearheaded the development of this co-funded opportunity, is very excited about its potential.
“It has been a great pleasure working with the exceptional people at BrightFocus Foundation and Glaucoma Research Foundation. Since this co-funding partnership is a first of its kind for MTEC, I truly appreciate the commitment by both foundations to making this partnership work.”
