Nut Swamp Student-Scientists
Partake in NestWatch Project
Nut Swamp Elementary School student-scientists in Mrs. Elizabeth Mullee's kindergarten class are participating in NestWatch, a nationwide bird monitoring program designed to track the status and trends in the reproductive biology of local nesting populations.

The program includes data tracking and reporting of:
  • When nesting occurs
  • The number of eggs laid
  • How many of those eggs hatch
  • And how many hatchlings survive

The NestWatch database is intended to be used to study the current condition of breeding bird populations in the United States, and any trending changes that may occur over time as a result of climate change, habitat degradation, loss/expansion of urban areas, and the introduction of non-native plants and animals to the ecosystem.

Nut Swamp scientists are tracking local bird populations with the support of Wild Birds Unlimited Inc., which has provided the students with all nesting supplies.
Leonardo Students Strive
to Beautify Their Campus
Inspired by the warmth of the spring season, Leonardo Elementary School students in Mrs. Donna Fanner and Ms. Lisa Delaney's classes recently took strides to beautify their campus by planting a garden near the faculty entrance and playground area.

The project was organized by Mrs. Mary-Margaret Kurta, and will serve as a beautiful addition to the school's classic landscape.

MTPS Eyes May 10 as Anticipated
Date to Follow Full Day Schedule
On Wednesday, a community letter from Superintendent of Schools, Mary Ellen Walker, indicated Monday, May 10 as the anticipated date that students will be able to return to a full day academic schedule, including lunch.

Our principals and assistant principals have been working with their Pandemic Response Teams to create plans for lunch that include 6 feet social distancing between students. We are currently in the process of hiring and onboarding new staff to provide additional supervision of students during lunch periods, as well as working with our food and transportation vendors on the changes needed to implement the full day schedule. Each school has created and is in the process of finalizing a unique plan for lunch based on their master schedule, in-person enrollments, facilities, etc. Your child’s principal will provide you with specific information on lunch procedures at his/her school, including food service information.

Additionally, on Monday, April 19, it is anticipated that the middle schools will provide the opportunity for students to attend in-person instruction five days a week. Students who currently participate in the four (4) day hybrid model will be scheduled to attend in-person five (5) days a week. Students participating in the 3/2 day cohort model will continue to attend following their regular cohort schedule, and virtual students will continue to participate remotely. Parents should notify the school if they wish to make a schedule change that deviates from the plan above.

For additional information please review this April 14 community letter.
High School North and South to Play in Inaugural Girls Flag Football League
When the Shore Conference launches its inaugural Girls Flag Football season on May 5, student-athletes from High School North and South will compete against seven other programs situated throughout Monmouth and Ocean County.

The league will feature teams from Holmdel, Matawan, Mater Dei Prep, Pinelands, Shore Regional, High School North, High School South, and an additional combined Middletown team.

The league was made possible through a partnership with the New York Giants, following the franchise's $64,000 donation to the Shore Conference to fund this 7-on-7 flag-format league.

Nike, a partner of the Giants, has announced an additional donation of Nike Women's Vapor Flag Football Uniforms to each participating team.

High School South head football coach, Steve Antonucci, was integral to the launch of the league, and will coach High School South's flag football team. High School North head coach, Steve Bush, will head the Lions flag team. High School South assistant coach Marc Tomo will oversee the combined Middletown team.

"The vision is quite simple, to provide an opportunity for every female who ever dreamed of the possibility of playing the great game of football to now have the opportunity to experience it in their own way," said Antonucci. "We have already seen a tremendous turnout in our schools for this opportunity. I truly believe that the game will be a huge success and I look forward to seeing the girls compete and enjoy what the game has to offer."

NJDOE Waives Spring Summative Assessments for Most Students
The U.S. Department of Education has approved New Jersey’s plan to delay statewide student learning assessments for most elementary and secondary school students until the fall.

Next fall, districts will administer the recently developed Start Strong summative assessments, which are built upon the traditional statewide tests administered each spring.  The Start Strong assessments are streamlined versions of the Department of Education’s NJSLA reading/language arts, mathematics and science assessments. This streamlined version of the test was piloted to approximately 90,000 New Jersey students this past fall.

Though the administration of NJSLA assessments will be delayed for most New Jersey students this spring, Governor Murphy noted that certain special education students, as well as those students participating in English Language Learning programs, will be assessed as originally planned.
