River Plaza Elementary Safe Routes Project Moving Forward
A collaborative initiative between the District and Middletown Township that was launched in 2018 has entered the preliminary engineering stage.

In a Jan. 27 media release, the Township announced it had begun the initial phase of its Safe Routes to School project near River Plaza Elementary School, an effort funded by a $1 million grant awarded by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority.

The funding will be used to improve safety conditions for pedestrians traveling along Hubbard Ave. from West Front St. to Navesink River Rd., a primary pathway for River Plaza families.

"Safely walking and biking to school is ingrained in the culture of River Plaza,” said River Plaza Principal David Whitman. “Our PFA and parent community has done an incredible job of facilitating and consistently supporting this culture by promoting to our students the physical and environmental health benefits of walking and biking to campus each day. Earning this grant is a credit to the dedication of our River Plaza community, and its completion will ensure the preservation of our culture."

MTBOE Partners with Township for Recreation Center Feasibility Study
The Middletown Board of Education and Township Committee have announced a collaborative effort to investigate the feasibility of re-purposing the Port Monmouth Elementary School property to develop an indoor athletics facility and recreation center along the Route 36 corridor.

The MTBOE and Township Committee have retained Pinnacle Indoor Sports to spearhead this study, an organization situated in Louisville, KY that has conducted similar initiatives across 41 states.

"In 2019, Port Monmouth School was closed and has been vacant for the last two years," said Board of Education President Frank Capone. "We are proud to be partnering with the Township to work toward creating a much-needed indoor sports and recreation complex for the residents of Middletown, rather than selling the property to the highest bidder where it may end up being over-developed."
