Did you know the FDA has cleared the
first brain stimulation device to help smokers quit?
|
|
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval for the BrainsWay deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) system to help adult smokers kick tobacco. This is the first FDA approval for any TMS device for addiction.
It was evaluated as an aid to short-term smoking cessation in a prospective, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, multicenter study that involved 262 adults who had a history of smoking an average of more than 26 years and had attempted to quit multiple times but failed.
In the full intention-to-treat population (all 262 participants), the 4-week continuous quit rate (CQR, the primary endpoint) was higher in the active deep TMS group than in the sham TMS group (17.1% vs 7.9%; P = .0238).
Among participants who completed the study ― i.e., those who underwent treatment for 4 weeks, kept daily records, and for whom confirmatory urine samples were available – the CQR was 28.4% in the active deep TMS group, compared to 11.7% in the sham treatment group (P = .0063).
The average number of cigarettes smoked per day, as determined on the basis of daily records (secondary endpoint), was statistically significantly lower in the active deep TMS group compared to the sham treatment group (P = .0311).

Drs. Tracy Smith, Georges Nahhas, Matthew Carpenter, Lindsay Squeglia, Vanessa Diaz, Adam Leventhal, and Jennifer Dahne recently published a research article in JAMA Pediatrics that reported that almost half of adolescents who vape (45%) are seriously interested in quitting, and one-quarter of adolescents who vape tried to quit within the past year. The article has been covered by CNN and Fox News, as well as a few dozen local news sources that have picked up those articles. Congratulations to the authors on this high-impact publication and all of its excellent press coverage!

Dr. Wendy Balliet was interviewed for South Carolina Public Radio's Health First program. Her segment focused on Coping with Caution Fatigue During the Pandemic. The interview can be accessed here.
Dr. Balliet also presented at LOWVELO Social Hour - COVID & Cancer: Trekking Through the New Norm. Her presentation, "Emotional Well-Being and Coping During COVID19" provided techniques to navigate through the "new normal" of the current pandemic.

Telehealth Equipment Helps Department Reach Victims of Crime Across SC
With the help of sponsorship from donors, the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center (NCVRTC), a division within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), has been able to expand telehealth services to patients across the state of SC during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Victims of crimes often face numerous barriers to treatment and the use of telehealth allows providers to continue to serve patients. However, many patients do not have access to smart devices or reliable internet/data to utilize telehealth, which has become necessary with remote services during the pandemic. Thanks to the support of donors to the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, the NCVRTC was able to purchase four cellular data enabled iPads, cases, and headsets to ship out to patients that would otherwise not be able to access mental health treatment during this time. The continued provision of telehealth equipment and support of these services will allow the division to serve victims of crime during this much needed time.

MUSC’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is home to the Women’s Reproductive Behavioral Health (WRBH) Division. The overarching mission of this division is to improve the lives of women, children, and families by increasing the identification and amelioration of maternal mental health and substance use disorders. The WRBH division provides direct clinical services to pregnant and postpartum women, educational training opportunities for clinicians and clinical researchers, and conducts clinical research that aims to improve the identification and treatment of peripartum mental health and substance use disorders.

Candidate will be a member of the Psychiatry Hospitalist Division and provide inpatient care on a general adult psychiatry unit and provide coverage across other inpatient areas as needed. Candidate will provide care as a Consult Liaison, and have research coverage.
