BUPRENORPHINE TESTING OFFERED BY THE
CLINICAL NEUROBIOLOGY LAB
As the opiate epidemic continues to menace our country, the growing use of Buprenorphine as a life-saving treatment is also growing. Certification for its use is becoming easier and more widely available. Recently the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has offered training in its use. Complimentary to that effort, the Department’s Clinical Neurobiology Laboratory has instituted an FDA approved urine buprenorphine test. This very sensitive and reliable test can be ordered by MUSC clinicians in EPIC and urine collections can either be analyzed at our lab on the first floor of the IOP (to the right of the lobby) or at the source through the main lab services. We can also “contract” directly with external treatment programs, research groups, and clinicians.

The urine buprenorphine test can be used to confirm use during treatment (sometimes necessary for insurance reimbursement and to ensure no diversion of medication), test prior to treatment, or when fully evaluating opiate abuse (buprenorphine has developed some street value and can be diverted from legitimate use).

For more information, contact Lorie Robertson , CNL lab manger, or Dr. Ray Anton , CNL Director.
WALK TO FIGHT SUICIDE
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. In South Carolina, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 15-34, and the rate of suicide is higher than the national average. On average, one person dies by suicide every 11 hours in South Carolina.

Each year nearly 250K people walk in hundreds of cities across the country in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Funds raised by the walk support research, advocacy, education, screen programs, and support services for those affected by suicide.

This year, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences will have a team at the event on Sunday, October 14th, 2018 at Hampton Park. Our team fundraising goal is $5,000.00 this year and we have already raised $1000.00 and have 5 registered participants from our department. Last year, we raised $3,145.00 and had 23 team members!

Please email Meg Wallace if you have any questions!
