Did you know that the College of Charleston and Clemson University
are joining forces with MUSC to provide enhanced student health care, including psychiatric services, to students?
|
|
The students now have 24/7 access to a health care provider through MUSC Health’s virtual urgent care. Clemson students have had scheduled access to telepsychiatry for the past academic year, and that service will now be provided at the College of Charleston as well.
Both universities have student health centers, and the doctors and nurses at those centers will continue to provide care. But, as Eugene Hong, M.D., chief physician executive at MUSC Health, pointed out, health care isn’t central to the mission of most universities.
“A university without a medical school is not in the business of delivering health care,” he said. “I think Clemson and the College of Charleston are being smart to look for a health care partner to deliver student health services.”
MUSC Health will supplement the care already provided by student health services by offering care when it wouldn’t otherwise be available – such as after-hours urgent care – and by offering more mental health services, an area of concern at colleges across the nation. An American College Health Association survey in 2019, for example, found that almost 28% of students reported that anxiety affected their academic performance, and 20% reported that depression affected their academic performance.
“It's a huge challenge for universities to deliver on mental health services. Already we’re doing telemental health services, and it’s going very well,” Hong said.
In addition, at the College of Charleston, MUSC Health will offer on-site psychiatry services, improved availability to clinical care, integrated imaging and lab and pharmacy services.

FACULTY ANNUAL LEAVE
CUTBACK EXTENSION
|
|
Effective June 30, the President's Council approved a one-time extension to the Faculty Annual Leave cutback date which was to take place July 1, 2020. Due to the COVID impacts to travel and the inability to take time off in recent months, the cutback date was extended so faculty members would have an opportunity to use accrued annual leave for an additional 90 days. The Faculty Annual Leave cutback date was extended to October 1, 2020. Based on this October 1 faculty cut back extension, any unused annual leave in excess of 360 hours (45 days) will be automatically reduced to the maximum allowed on October 1, 2020, excluding the July, August and September 2020, accruals.
Note that the accruals for July, August and September 2020, will remain in place, so that faculty members have an opportunity to use this accrued leave, along with other accruals in the coming months, through the end of the fiscal year, by June 30, 2021.
Effective June 1, 2019, Faculty members became eligible to donate annual leave to the Catastrophic Leave Program per HRM Policy 48: Catastrophic Leave. Due to the extension, Annual leave donations must be submitted by September 15 completing the Leave Donation Form. Department Business Administrators must ensure the donated leave is recorded in the payroll system prior to the October cutbacks.
Please note sick leave balances for Faculty members are not affected at this time as sick leave cutbacks occur on a calendar year basis (January 1 – December 31).
If you have questions concerning annual leave cutbacks or accruals, please contact Monique Robinson at robinsmo@musc.edu or 843-792-7225.

We are seeking senator nominations for the MUSC Faculty Senate. All MUSC faculty are able to nominate faculty members (including self-nominations). There is no limit to how many nominations you submit. Here are a few commonly asked questions about the senate and the role of faculty senator.
