MUSD Teacher of the Year: Pomeroy's Laurie Fiatal

Pomeroy Elementary School teacher Laurie Fiatal was one of 30 Santa Clara County 2023 Teachers of the Year selected by their school districts for their exceptional dedication to students, skills in the classroom, and commitment to lifelong learning. She was honored by the MUSD Board of Education on October 24.

Student members of the Milpitas High School PUSO Club shared the importance of celebrating their Filpino heritage in tandem with the Board unanimously adopting Resolution 2024.18 Recognizing October as Filipino American History Month and Honoring Larry Itliong Day on October 25, 2023.

MHS True Colors club offers student perspectives on LGBTQ+ History Month

Student members of the Milpitas HS TrueColors Club offered their student perspectives video on the importance of acknowledging LGBTQ+ History Month in conjunction with the Board unanimously adopting Resolution 2024.17 Celebrating and Recognizing October as LGBTQ+ History Month.

Highlights

Milpitas Community Education Foundation announces its 2023 education grant winners

Milpitas Community Education Foundation Board President Amin Fazal and the MCEF board announced winners of the non-profit organization's 2023 Grant Program.


Milpitas High School teacher Letta Meyer received a $3,000 grant for her Forensic Science; Curtner Elementary School educators Naomi Patner, Natalie Tice and Mary Paek were recipients of a $2,000 grant for a Sowing Creativity initiative; and MHS teacher Robert Alvelais received $500 for Science Olympiad.

Superintendent State of the District Update

At the Oct. 24 meeting, Superintendent Jordan shared weekly Attendance Rates, including what impacts attendance, our policy on student use of technology, and events happening throughout the district, such as the MHS Wellness Center Grand Opening on November 16.

Review of Student / Parent Handbook, bullying policy

Superintendent Cheryl Jordan led related discussions on digital citizenship, cyberbullying, student use of technology, and Policy 5131.2: Bullying to determine if revisions are needed. In addition, Student Board Reps were tasked with developing a Digital Citizenship and School Safety Resolution for a future board meeting.

MHS student thespians perform in Edinburgh, Scotland festival

Milpitas High School Theater Department Director Kaila Schwartz was honored by the Board and District leadership for accompanying a group of her student thespians to Scotland, where they performed during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest and most prestigious arts festival, part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF). The Festival Fringe includes nearly 4,000 different performances of music, theatre, dance, and comedy during its three-week run.
