Rancho MS honored by Board after being named a 2021 California Distinguished School
The Rancho Milpitas Middle School Team was honored by the Board of Education after being selected as a 2021 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education.

"It's a great honor to receive this distinction. It really validates the work that we've been doing and that we have sustained over the last several years to serve our students, to collaborate with our community, to find ways to keep learning and be effective in how we support all of our students,” said Rancho Principal Casey McMurray, who was joined by a host of his team on Tuesday evening.

The 2021 California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education for all students.

“The work that you put in everyday is definitely something that is exceptional and you continue to put yourselves out there," Superintendent Cheryl Jordan said. "I appreciate the work that you do."

Board adopts Autism Acceptance Resolution 
MUSD students Aaron McRoads, Shamir Morely, Yugandhar Kekare, Carl Sullivan, and Lleyton Jethro Mintu produced this video reading of Resolution 2021.33 Recognizing and Honoring April as Autism Acceptance Month, with guidance from MUSD Director of Student Services and Special Education Mary Jude Doerpinghaus.
Knights of Columbus St. Elizabeth Council supports MUSD Special Education Program
The Knights of Columbus St. Elizabeth Council #8747, represented by Gwan Alisantosa and Manuel Mallabo, was honored by the Board and District leadership for their donation in support of the Milpitas Unified School District Special Education Program.

We’ve always been a sharing, collaborative crew. That’s why we’ve begun this video series "MUSD Innovators on the Move!" highlighting the practices, methods and approach of our teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals, and classified team members.

Principal's Report: Pomeroy's focus on SEL nurtures stronger student engagement
Principal Nichol Klein and her Pomeroy Elementary Team focused on the Social Emotional Learning taking place within their school community throughout the 2020-21 year.

“This year, we’ve been putting a focus on ensuring our students are engaged in a way that we haven’t done so in previous years,” said Klein, sharing how attendance has jumped 1.3 percent from 97.2 last year to 98.5 this year.

Principal Klein was joined by school psychologist Jessica Bui, teacher Courtney Caglia Hilty, and sixth grader Anoushka Mitra for the Pomeroy’s report.

Bui shared how the Pomeroy staff has incorporated a weekly Social-Emotional Learning lesson into each of their classrooms to help promote self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.

Caglia Hilty is the coordinator for Pomeroy’s Building Effective Schools Together (BEST) program, which is now in its 12th year. “Our mission is really to provide practices to cultivate a sense of ownership and family where students build a community of support and camaraderie amongst each other and within wider Pomeroy community,” she explained.

Mitra is a proud PeaceMaker at Pomeroy, helping her schoolmates feel welcome and fully enjoy their experiences within the school community in an online setting. They organize events such as Friday Club and Spirit Days.
Staff shares experiences with small pilot Escuela Village Tutoring Program
Thomas Russell Middle School Principal Sean Anglon shared an overview on the impact of the Escuela Village Tutoring Program, lessons learned and recommendations for expansion 2021 in this report.

Anglon was assisted by teacher lead Edgar Aguilar-Chavarria, Associate Professor Dr. David Lopez, and Weller Principal Deanna Sainten to explain the Escuela Village Tutoring Program pilot.
Learning & Development Team shares Expanded Learning Opportunity Plan
Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Development Norma Rodriguez and Director
Raquel Kusunoki led the presentation on MUSD's Expanded Learning Opportunity Plan in accordance with Assembly Bill 8, which provides funding to eligible school districts to implement learning recovery programs.

The plan provides supplemental instruction, supports for social and emotional well-being and; to the maximum extent permissible, meals and snacks to specified student groups, as defined in California Education Code Section 43522.

Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Grants can be used for::
  • Extending instructional learning time,
  • Accelerating progress to close learning gaps
  • Integrated pupil supports
  • Community learning hubs
  • Supports for credit deficient pupils
  • Additional academic services
  • Training for school staff.
 
Staff reviewed the requirements for and development of the Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant Plan. Additionally, Staff shared how various stakeholders in MUSD are envisioning support for students and preliminary summer extension offerings.
Measure AA Bond Projects Update
Travis Kirk, of TBK Construction, offered a brief update on the Measure AA projects, including: Randall Modernization, Phase II of Mattos, Rancho and Russell track and fields, and the Milpitas High gymnasium and theater.

of education items at April 27 meeting
The Board of Education unanimously approved the following education items at the April 27 meeting:
  • Sunshine Proposal: Milpitas Unified School District Initial Proposal for Reopeners of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to Classified School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter 281
  • Sunshine Proposal: Classified School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter 281 to Milpitas Unified School District Initial Proposal for Reopeners of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) 
  • Proposed revision to existing Board Policies 4119.11 (Unlawful Harassment of Employees) & Board Policy 5145.70 (Sexual Harassment - Students)
  • Proposed revision to existing Board Policies 4111 (Recruitment and Selection), Board Policy 4131 (Personnel: Staff Development) & Board Policy 5144.1 (Suspensions and Expulsions)
  • Conduct the first of three readings of newly proposed Board Policy 0415 (Equity). The first reading is scheduled for April 27th, with the second and third readings taking place on May 11th and May 25th respectively.
  • Robert A Bothman Construction’s Agreement for the Rancho Track & Field Project
  • Resolution 2021.34 requesting to establish tax rate for bonds of Milpitas Unified School District expected to be sold during fiscal year 2021-22, and authorizing necessary actions in connection therewith
  • Resolution 2021.35 to establish Student Activity Special Revenue Fund 088
  • Approve DCG Strategies Property Investments to Evaluate the Murphy Property
  • Selected Van Le (Eastside Union SD) and Andres Quintero (Alum Rock SD) in CSBA Delegate Assembly Runoff Election
