MUSEUMS in HARTFORD & at YALE OCTOBER 29-30, 2021
Join our late-autumn overnight trip to some remarkable museums in HARTFORD and NEW HAVEN. The NEW BRITAIN MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART, THE WADSWORTH ATHENEUM, The YALE CENTER FOR BRITISH ART and THE YALE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY are all on our itinerary. Brief tours of each city will give us an opportunity to appreciate and enjoy the history and architecture surrounding the museums we will visit.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29 – Depart the Philadelphia area and enjoy a box lunch en route to Connecticut. Our first stop is HARTFORD for a short tour of downtown including the CAPITOL BUILDING and its surroundings and a visit to the world class WADSWORTH ATHENEUM, America’s first museum founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth. A special exhibit on view is BY HER HAND: ARTEMESIA GENTILESCHI & WOMEN ARTISTS IN ITALY, 1500 – 1800. Our next stop is one of my favorites, the NEW BRITAIN MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART in a lovely suburban setting adjacent to a park designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted. Check into the HAMPTON INN & SUITES in nearby FARMINGTON. Dinner is included in one of West Hartford’s trendy eateries. (L,D)

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30 – Enjoy two extraordinary museums on the campus of YALE UNIVERSITY in NEW HAVEN and a brief guided walk focusing on the architecture of the campus. The collection at the acclaimed YALE CENTER FOR BRITISH ART vividly narrates the story of British life, art, and culture since the end of the Middle Ages. Across the way is the YALE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY which has recently undergone a major expansion. It is known as a center for teaching, learning and scholarship with its diverse collections from around the world. Both museums were designed by Philadelphia architect LOUIS I KAHN. In the late afternoon, we will depart NEW HAVEN. A rest stop will be made en-route to the Philadelphia area. (B)
