This unique garden is the official display garden of HIPS and features a breathtaking collection of over 275 iris cultivars, with a strong emphasis on tall bearded irises. Impressively, 236 of these are historic varieties, some of which date back as far as the 1500s, offering a rare glimpse into centuries of horticultural beauty and preservation.

Come explore this living museum of iris history at the peak of its bloom. Fred will be on hand to share his deep knowledge of iris cultivation and the mission of HIPS to safeguard these botanical treasures.

Russian sage, and herbs. The backyard is bordered by rhododendrons, hydrangeas,

maple trees, and evergreens. A shaded path winds through a rear perennial bed. On

What is a Walkabout? Walkabouts are the club’s informal garden visits that offer a relaxed way to share ideas, inspiration, and a love of gardening. Over the past few summers, members across the island have graciously opened their gardens—large and small—for others to explore. Members stroll through fellow gardeners’ spaces, exchange tips, and simply enjoy the beauty and individuality of each garden. Whether pristine or a work in progress, every garden offers something unique. Since gardens are ever-changing pieces of art, many hosts have showcased their evolving spaces in previous years, making repeat visits a delightful discovery and offering new members a refreshing array of surprises. Come and go at your own convenience during the designated Walkabout time.

Interested in hosting a walkabout? Walkabouts are held from May through August—choose the day and time that works best for you to share your garden. If you’re interested in learning more about hosting your garden, please contact Ty Johnston at 339-364-1363 or email tyrene.johnston@gmail.com.
