Mediator Musings: Optimism

                                                                       by Sara Barnes

It’s rough out there. Wars, atrocities, mass shootings, global warming, toxic polarization, free-floating anger and anxiety. We are often asked at MV Mediation about what we can do about global problems. For me, I try to embrace optimism whenever I can manage to find some.

The optimism principle is not an easy one to stick to, and it isn’t always possible to keep from becoming demoralized. I thought that while we are coping with multiple international, national and local crises, I’d offer approaches that have helped me. Maybe these tips might, in turn, help others during difficult times.

Look for the Helpers

Mister Rogers suggested to parents ways to talk about tragedies and disheartening events with young children. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping . . . That will give you hope.’”

Do Something

It helps, for me, to look beyond my own life to think in a more collectivistic way. I do what I can, and so can others. Each of our individual actions will ripple out, hopefully positively, from our own efforts. Find something you can do within your capabilities and talents.

Think Historically

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. popularized this notion: The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. I return to this idea fairly often.

Face Your Fears

When fear rises up in my consciousness, I turn to the poetry of Audre Lorde. She said this about fear: “When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”

Learn Something

For me, I find that learning something helps me to handle demoralization and sadness. As the mantra says, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” I have always found that to be true for me.

Framed within a wider context, concerns may seem to be a bit smaller, a bit more handleable. In the process, a smidge of optimism peeks through the gloomy skies with a little bit of needed light.

Here’s a longer version, originally from 2023, slightly revised.

Conversations Across Generations Take Root

Our Weaving Generations: Multigenerational Panel Forum Series launched on March 21 at the Edgartown Library with a wonderful turnout of 31 participants. Framed by the spirit of Martha’s Vineyard, where stories and traditions are passed down across generations, the conversation on Conflict in Family Life opened the door to thoughtful dialogue and honest reflection.

After the panel, participants broke into small groups, where conversations flowed more personally: neighbors, strangers and relatives found common ground through shared stories and listening. We closed the afternoon with a lighthearted, interactive activity—a reminder that even in conversations about generational differences, laughter and connection are never far behind!

Across the Island, Across Generations: The Dialogue Continues

Join Us for What’s Next

The conversation continues in April:

  • April 25 – Oak Bluffs Library (2–4 pm): Conflict in the Workplace

Another series is coming soon via teleconference for those who are not local.

We are here to serve our community, all residents, regardless of immigration status. See information about immigration here.

🧭  Conflict Coaching:

Build Skills, Find Clarity

Don’t avoid conflict—navigate it.

Whether you’re navigating a difficult conversation, workplace tension or family dynamics, conflict coaching offers a practical, empowering path forward.

This fall, join us for our Conflict Coaching training, beginning September 13 on Zoom. Held Mondays from 10 am to 12:30 pm, this 9-session course (plus practicum) equips participants with the tools, strategies and confidence to approach conflict with clarity and intention.

Looking for support right now? Conflict coaching is also available as a one-on-one service. This voluntary, confidential process helps individuals gain new perspective, develop effective communication strategies, and create a personalized plan to move forward. It can be especially helpful when only one party is ready to engage and mediation isn’t an option.

Board of Directors Corner

The March meeting included updates on succession planning, board nominations, donor campaign outreach and legislative engagement. The Board also discussed ongoing DEI-focused initiatives, including the Multigenerational Conflict and Productive Conversations Program and the Weaving Generations series, with attention to impact and future direction.

DEIJ+B: DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, JUSTICE + BELONGING

Learning through

a Conflict Resolution Lens

April offers a chance to reflect on how inclusion, equity and collective care show up in our communities. Together, these celebrations remind us that belonging is built through awareness, action and connection.

National Deaf History Month –– This observance highlights the importance of communication access and equity. For mediators and community members alike, it’s a reminder to create spaces where all voices are heard and respected.

Earth Day (April 22) –– Earth Day highlights our shared responsibility to care for the environments we all depend on, while recognizing that environmental challenges often impact communities unevenly. It reflects the values of mediation by emphasizing collaboration, inclusive dialogue and working together to address complex issues in ways that are fair, creative and co-created.

National Volunteer Month –– Community mediation is rooted in service. Beyond individual cases, mediators spread their skills throughout the community, sharing tools for conflict resolution and helping build a culture of self-determination, where people feel empowered to shape their own outcomes, and impartiality, where fairness and neutrality create space for all voices to be heard.

OUR PROGRAMS & SERVICES:

CONFLICT COACHING

A voluntary, confidential and self-determined one-on-one process designed to assist individuals to gain a new perspective. Conflict coaching can be an alternate service when one person requests mediation but the other party declines. Clients, along with their coach, review healthy conflict-resolution tools and strategies, leaving clients with a self-determined plan to productively resolve conflict.

LOCAL CONSUMER PROGRAM

MV Mediations Local Consumer Program (LCP) is part of a statewide network of agencies working together in cooperation with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office to help protect consumers from unfair or deceptive business practices. If youre facing challenges with retail purchases, utility bills, home improvement contracts, car sales and financing or any other consumer transaction, our LCP staff can provide advocacy and an opportunity to work with the business toward a solution—without going to court. To file a complaint against a business, the first step is to fill out the complaint form through the Attorney General's Consumer Advocacy & Response Division.

Divorce, Family & Conflict Resolution

We offer help talking with your spouse or partner about divorce, parenting issues, custody schedules, financial decisions and communication itself, and can help you to renegotiate existing plans.
