Counselor Corner

Fall is an ideal time for college visits or job shadowing for junior and senior students. Visiting campuses allows for discussions with representatives about programs, resources, financial aid, and interactions with current students. Check college websites for Open House or Program Preview Days. If visiting during a school day, complete a "College Visit Form" two days ahead and submit it to Mrs. Goff in the south office, A100. Students have two college visit days per year.

Job shadowing is an effective way to explore potential careers and understand daily tasks. By contacting professionals in your desired field, you can observe their routines and assess your suitability for the job based on the required skills. Many local organizations host job shadowing events for high school students, and you can also consult your school counselor for options and obtain the necessary MVCTC job shadowing packet.

October is College Application Month in Ohio, urging seniors to apply to colleges. Students should create a list of 5-10 schools, including reach, target, and backup options. Some schools waive application fees; those facing financial burdens should consult their school counselor about fee waivers. Applications can be submitted via college websites or the Common App, which allows access to over 1,000 colleges with one application. For HBCUs, the Common Black College App offers a single application for a $20 fee to apply to 66 schools.

To request transcripts, use the appropriate form or portal (like Naviance or Parchment) and list your partner school counselor. For college applications, students should write personal essays and gather letters of recommendation. Opt for essay prompts that allow personal responses and have strong examples. It's advisable to have an adult review the essays before submission. For recommendations, select an adult (non-relative) who can speak to your skills and abilities in and out of school. Provide a summary of your activities, accomplishments, and future plans at least two weeks before the letter.

This month, the MVCTC school counselors will be focusing on the following topics through discussions, presentations, sharing resources, and meeting with students individually or in the MAC during their lunchtime:

  • College Application Month
  • Mental Illness Awareness Week – World Mental Health Day 10/10
  • National Bullying Prevention – Bullying Prevention Day 10/16
  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month
