Greetings,

"The Service you do for others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth." -- Muhammad Ali

Beginning today through July 4th, the USCIS will hold nearly100 naturalization ceremonies across the United States to help celebrate the 240th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence! Nearly 7000 new citizens are expected to be administered the Oath of Allegiance during these ceremonies at public parks and historic landmarks nationwide. USCIS Director León Rodríguez stated, "These new Americans will strengthen the fabric of our nation with their contributions to American society and prosperity, and be able to enjoy all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship." There will be photos and remarks about the different ceremonies and the experiences of some of these new citizens on Twitter and other social media, just search hashtag #newUScitizen to find them.

June has been an extremely busy time for MVP Law Group. Attorney Kellie Lego attended the Maryland State Bar Association Annual Conference in Ocean City, MD from June 15 - June 18, where she attended various presentations concerning Maryland laws. The presentation Attorney  Lego found most useful was a Crimmigration Presentation  presented by fellow colleagues of the MSBA Immigration Law Section focusing on the effects of criminal charges on the foreign born.  Attorney Lego has been Chair of the MSBA Immigration Section for the 2015-2016 year and was able to celebrate the Section's accomplishments during the conference. For the first time in MSBA Immigration Section history, Attorney Lego and fellow colleagues hosted an immigration pro bono legal clinic for Eastern Shore residents during the Conference; approximately 50 residents were given free 20 minute consultations from Immigration Lawyers of the Maryland State Bar. A week later, Attorney Lego attended the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada from June 22 - June 25 attended by over 3,000 Immigration Attorneys across the U.S. Attorney Lego attended three full days of presentations to stay up-to-date on the ever changing regulatory environment, and to learn and implement useful tools and resources to effectively and efficiently help her clients.

After hearing of the 4-4 split ruling on U.S. v. Texas by SCOTUS, we have finally accepted the fact that we will not be able to piecemeal immigration legislation.  We need to continue to pressure Congress into passing a bipartisan Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill. The majority of Americans are FOR immigration reform, let's make it happen!

In other immigration news, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) Visa Bulletin for July 2016 is now available. The cutoff date movement is consistent with earlier predictions. The cutoff date for the EB2 category for India moved from 10/1/04 to 11/1/04 and EB3 moved from 9/22/04 to 10/22/04. The cutoff date for the EB2 category for Chinese Nationals remained at 1/1/10 and the cutoff date for the EB3 category for Chinese Nationals remained at 1/1/10.

We hope you continue to read our newsletter as well as our blog in order to stay in touch and obtain important information concerning changes to the regulatory environment and new trends in the adjudication of petitions.

Question #1 - Criminal Convictions

Will a criminal conviction impair my ability to receive a temporary visa?

Answer #1

It depends upon the type of criminal conviction. Depending upon the seriousness of the criminal conviction, it is possible to be inadmissible and/or deportable for certain criminal convictions - crimes of moral turpitude, crimes involving domestic violence. You should speak with an Immigration Attorney to further discuss your situation.
