MVRPC Martin Kim Receives Food Champion Partner Award

On Friday, August 8, 2025, Martin Kim, MVRPC’s Director of Community and Regional Planning, was recognized as the 2025 Montgomery County Food Champion Community Partner Award winner. The Food Champion Awards recognize individuals or organizations for their outstanding contributions to promoting and supporting our local food system in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge, along with City of Dayton Commissioner Matt Joseph and Ambassador Tony Hall from the Hall Hunger Initiative, presented the award.

“The Community Partner Award recognizes a community member who demonstrates dedication and commitment to their community and whose impact is exemplary and measurable. This year, we recognize Martin Kim with the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission. Martin's work in mapping and analyzing local food system data has filled a critical gap in our region. His efforts help us plan smarter, advocate better and make measurable progress, together. He's also a committed member of the Food Equity Coalition and a true partner in building healthier communities. Thank you, Martin, for your dedication to making our community stronger!”

Martin Kim stated, “This award is definitely a recognition of MVRPC’s outstanding work under the PLAN4Health - Miami Valley Initiative, especially the Regional Food System Overview Report and the Dashboard. I am so honored and proud to receive this award on my team’s behalf!"

Del Mar Encore Fellows Visit MVRPC

Del Mar Encore Fellows Visit MVRPC

The Del Mar Encore Fellows is an initiative of The Dayton Foundation that is changing the conversation around aging. The initiative harnesses the talents and expertise of the Miami Valley’s retired or career-transitioning older adults to aid area nonprofits and move the needle on community initiatives. Since 2017, more than a dozen highly skilled, older adults have been at work in the community as Del Mar Encore Fellows, helping other organizations address significant community issues. MVRPC has been privileged to host a Fellow for four years straight, and the opportunity has catalyzed both the Age-Friendly Initiative and the Miami Valley Age-Friendly Network within the Institute for Livable & Equitable Communities. In August, MVRPC and our current Fellow Arnie Biondo hosted the full cohort of this year’s Del Mar Encore Fellows (as seen in the provided image); to learn about the regional work of the agency and how the Age-Friendly Initiative contributes to the Institute. MVRPC expresses its gratitude to The Dayton Foundation for our continued participation in the program, and to Arnie Biondo and our previous Fellows for the expertise and experience they have added to our team every year.

MVRPC Publishes the Community Health Mapping Application

Community Health Mapping

MVRPC is pleased to announce the release of the Community Health Mapping application. Published as the seventh project from the PLAN4Health – Miami Valley Initiative, this application features five interactive map galleries, providing data and information on health factors and conditions, health outcomes, and the relationship between them in the Miami Valley.

The application uses data from the PLACES Data Portal provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Social Determinants of Health Conditions and Active Living Conditions measurements developed by MVRPC as part of the PLAN4Health – Miami Valley Initiative.

We hope the data and information provide helpful insights on our current health conditions. In addition, we hope the information would facilitate planners and public health professionals making informed decisions as we work together to create environments that promote healthy behaviors, improve health outcomes, and achieve healthy people and communities.

MVRPC’s PLAN4Health – Miami Valley Initiative was launched in the Spring of 2021 to explore how planning can impact health outcomes. The PLAN4Health - Miami Valley Initiative is a multi-year effort with a focus on projects and programs intended to:

  • Promote and advocate for “Health in All Plans and Policies”
  • Convene and engage partners to improve conditions that are known to be key determinants of health
  • Advance planning efforts aimed at creating conditions for healthy people and communities

The current federal transportation legislation, known as the IIJA, defines the stewardship role of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in the implementation of the mandated Metropolitan Transportation Planning Process. As a result of the planning requirements, the federal agencies are required to review and certify, at least every four (4) years, that the Transportation Planning Processes of the Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), such as MVRPC, are in compliance.
