MODERN WIDOWS CLUB
Changing the World - One Widow at a Time
THIS YEAR HAS BEEN A YEAR OF
NEW BEGINNINGS AND GROWTH!
In 2019, Modern Widows Club impacted the lives of over  32,000  widows around the world because people like you care about empowering widows as much as we do!! Our vision 8 years ago was to create an empowering space for widows to lean into life, build resilience by embracing their lives in a compassionate, supportive and inspiring community. That vision led to the massive growth we have experienced today (keep reading below).
It turns out that serving widows was very, very good and  very, very  needed because it resonated with thousands upon thousands of widows around the world. Amazing!!! But once they were empowered, they didn’t want to stay still, they wanted to MOVE FORWARD and GIVE BACK by making a powerful difference in the world. They wanted a way to carry on their love and honor the legacy of their loved ones.
So next, we saw the great need for widows to be supported and inspired to become widow mentors, leaders and advocates in their own communities to …..Guess what?…. Serve, mentor, lead and advocate for more widows. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.

Our  MWC Widow Leadership Development Program  is the only one in the world, an audacious and necessary movement for women in widowhood aspiring to give back and change the course of ‘her-widow-story’ everywhere. Our MWC leader's efforts have become the real pivotal change the world needed. They are the keystone of our organization and the most compassionate, educated, motivated, empowered and inspirational widow advocates we’ve ever seen in history.

They are changing the future and giving a voice to
millions of voiceless women around the world.

The time has come for widows to be seen, heard and respected in all ways possible, for their future matters to the viability of our local, national and international communities to thrive.
We are excited to strategically expand all MWC efforts in 2020, and welcome you to come along with us!
HERE ARE JUST A FEW
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
JANUARY 2019
NASHVILLE CHAPTER LAUNCHES
In January 2019, our  Nashville Chapter  launched and has seen dynamic growth month to month. We are grateful that Nashville widows have found a supportive community led by compassionate widow leaders to monthly share meals, stories, host informative speakers, and rally local resources that empower women to thrive in widowhood.

FEBRUARY 2019
ORANGE COUNTY (CA) CHAPTER LAUNCHES
In February 2019, MWC launched OC (Orange County, CA) Chapter due to the great need for widows in the LA area. Leader Windy Kerr stepped forward from attending the LA Chapter to leading the chapter by expanding in the OC area and we are so grateful. She has grown tremendously through this journey and inspired many women to move forward courageously with their own lives in the process. We look forward to launching even more California chapters in 2020.
JUNE 2019
INTERNATIONAL WIDOWS DAY
Every year on June 23rd, we strive to bring more awareness to this special day for widows, which was established by the United Nations in 2010.

This year, we set out a challenge to our chapters to request a special proclamation from their cities to recognize International Widows Day! Orlando was the first city and Florida the first state to officially recognize International Widows Day. Several of our chapters received approval for June 23rd to be recognized in their communities.

Several new efforts raised awareness of International Widows Day:
  1. Carolyn Moor was invited to speak to an audience of 200 widows, government leaders, and guests in Orlando at a special IWD2019 luncheon on June 23rd at Orlando Baptist Church,
  2. Our Wisconsin chapter walked a mall with MWC signs to raise awareness, and
  3. Other Chapters took part in a special lantern lighting ceremony or celebrated by gathering together and appreciating one another.

SEPTEMBER 2019
Modern Widows Club Celebrates 5th Anniversary
Although the concept of widow-to-widow mentoring started in 2011 in my Orlando home, it wasn’t until 2014 that we applied and received our 501c3 nonprofit status as a nonprofit organization serving to empower widows. Since then, it has grown to become an international movement of understanding, compassion, education and positive change between widows and society at large.

We are excited for 2020, and beyond, as the premier widows nonprofit that is strategically ensuring widows are served for future generations to come. Sustainability and responsible growth are our focus for our upcoming strategic meeting in January 2020, to be held in Austin, TX.
OCTOBER 2019
5th Annual Leadership Conference
In 2019, we saw our greatest growth at the  5th Annual MWC Leadership Conference  in Nashville, TN. We welcomed a record-breaking attendance of 55 existing and future new chapter leaders for our 2 1/2 day weekend of training, mentoring, and raising the bar for widow leadership development sponsored by an anonymous donor. It was life-changing for all involved.
We humbly started this conference in 2015 with 7 devoted leaders (it was a powerful girls trip to Sedona - with a purpose), together we shared our hopes and dreams for MWC’s future.
Fast forward to today and after many years of listening to hundreds of thousands of widows voices, we are seeing the hopes and dreams become reality and the advancement of our widow leadership program expand in extraordinary ways. We look forward to how all our MWC leaders will be serving widows in local chapters across the U.S and internationally with our new advancements on the horizon.
PUTTING THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING
CARS & GUITARS FUNDRAISER A HUGE SUCCESS!

It was a special night for our ladies to shine and we were so honored to take part in the First Anniversary Celebration of NaSHEville and what they stand for.
Our Cars & Guitars Fundraising Event was a fun and successful evening hosted by NaSHEville and sponsored by TAKL, Outback Presents , Frost Specialty Inc., Andrews Cadillac Company , and Elliott Davis . The unique event space was generously donated and held in the Private Vintage Car Barn of TAKL owners Willis and Joyce Johnson of Brentwood, TN. Our very own fellow MWC widow, songwriter Alita Allen (Langford), performed two original songs.

This event overlapped with the 5th Annual Leadership Conference and gave the leaders an opportunity to practice their ‘Elevator Speech’ skills in order to share their own powerful story of how MWC has impacted their life personally with the 200 attendees. The results were extraordinary.

To date, we raised an estimated $225,000 for Modern Widows Club, all thanks to the many generous donors, sponsors, volunteers, and matching gifts that we received. This will enable us to launch a minimum of 10 new chapters in the first quarter of 2020 with trained widow leaders and much more.
NEW HIRES
Executive Director, Gina Strasser
We are honored to hire our new Executive Director after two years of volunteering with Carolyn Moor, our first Executive Director and MWC Founder. With her former nonprofit experience, and as a fellow MWC widow, she is advancing the structure and procedures of the organization to create a strong and sustainable future. We are excited to see her flourish the MWC vision in 2020.
Founder/President/Development Director, Carolyn Moor
After 8 years as MWC Founder and Executive Director, Carolyn’s role has expanded to President and Development Director whose goals are to advance MWC’s mission, exposure, partnership, and funding potential. Her concepts to revolutionize how widows are served have always fueled MWC’s progress and we look forward to how her new position advances widow advocacy on a global scale. She looks forward to visiting with our local chapters enabling her to meet with leaders and members, as well as helping to produce the 3rd Annual MWC Widow Empowerment Event to be held in Houston, June 2020.
Social Media Coordinator, Sunshine Woodyard
Sunshine was one of the first original widows who met at Carolyn's home at the beginning of MWC in 2011 and has continued to strongly support MWC. She went back to college and received an M.A. in Mass Communications at UCF and now she’s using those talents to serve the community that was there for her!
MWC ADVISORY COUNCIL
We have initiated an Advisory Council to assist with event planning, marketing, and development of organizational growth. We are honored to have Dr. Steven Southwick as an advisor and medical expert in the areas of grief and resilience.

Dr. Southwick is the Lead Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, PTSD and Resilience Science. Finding his book,  Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life’s Greatest Challenges , and being featured with him in The Wall Street Journal was a fateful, game-changing moment for us! He was a speaker at the Widow Empowerment Event in 2018 and hopes to join us in 2020. His research is already integrated into all of our programs. We’ are going to impact how widows are served by applying his important life’s work even more!!!  READ MORE
